No new eaglet news - although it should be taking its first flight any day now. The adult eagles are very much in evidence these days, much to the delight of the "eagle watchers" who seem to be across the street almost constantly. Have you seen "our" eagles yet?
It is 40 degrees at 7:15 a.m. this morning. The rain seems to have stopped - at least for the moment. The high temperature is supposed to reach the low sixties today.
February 27, 2003
Although the photo above was not taken today, it seemed appropriate. Perhaps looking at a picture of the beach will make it not seem so dreary and cold?
It is 45 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning. The 90% chance of rain certainly occurred last night! In fact, right now there is still a light rain. The high temperature should be near sixty today.
February 26, 2003
Our eaglet has still not flown for the first time, although there are usually five or six people keeping watch at any given time. Everyone certainly seems to be excited about "our" bald eagles!
After a beautiful couple of days the weather is slightly chilly this morning. Probably not much sunshine today, since rain is on the way. It is 48 degrees at 7:15 a.m. this morning. The high temperature should only reach sixty today, with a 90% chance of showers tonight.
February 25, 2003
The sunshine is in full force on Kiawah again today - what does that pesky groundhog in Pennsylvania know about winter anyway? It certainly seems that winter has already left our island.
It is 55 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning. The high temperature is supposed to be in the lower sixties today, with a chance of light showers this evening.
February 24, 2003
As it gets warmer, Kiawah's critters are getting more active (and people are too!). Late last night a fox was startled crossing the Kiawah Island Parkway. Its fluffy tail bounced along behind it as it skittered along the grass at the edge of the parkway.
Don't forget that the Kiawah Pops Book Club is hosting Nicholas Gage, author of "Greek Fire" today at the Sandcastle from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Just contact the Sandcastle if you plan to be there.
It is 40 degrees at 7:00 a.m. this morning. The high temperature should be in the upper sixties today.

Did you figure out where to find the bench in the picture above? It is behind the Vanderhorst Gate, in Marsh Island Park. When you cross the bridge over the marsh, walk until the path stops. Once there, turn left and follow the path to its end. There you will find it!
This morning it is 70 at 8:40. Today's high temperature should reach the lower seventies.
February 21, 2003
Today's picture is one of Kiawah's lesser known spots. This little bench is a terrific place to take a picnic, read a book, or just relax and enjoy the sunshine. Do you know where it can be found? <Hint: It is behind the Vanderhorst Gate.>

It is starting to get greener on Kiawah now. Soon the deer will be out and about again, and so will more of the birds!
Soon the Kiawah Island Bird House Team will be scouting out the bird houses on Kiawah's golf courses. Keep an eye out for those bluebirds!
February 19, 2003
Kiawah is home to so many different species of plants and animals. From bobcats to cormorants, otters to deer, we have "critters" galore. We see wax myrtles and rattlebushes, live oaks and trumpet creepers, loblolly pines and sweet gums. What Kiawah plants and "critters" have you seen lately?
February 18, 2003
By now you have seen various friends and neighbors mentioned and pictured here on this site. Whether running in local races or attending functions, we are trying to let you "get to know your Kiawah neighbors". To that end, you are cordially invited to share YOUR accomplishments, special birthdays, or anniversaries! Just click on the link at the bottom of this page to e-mail the webmaster. Please be sure to give as much notice as possible, so that you can be remembered on your special date!

Today's photo was taken next to the entrance of Cassique. These egrets look like they are attending a party! Perhaps egrets play contract bridge? Or are they just planning their spring activities? What do you think?
February 16, 2003
This is the last day of the Lowcountry Blues Bash. If you have not seen any of the performances yet, better hurry!
This is also the final day for the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. For those of you who are going to downtown Charleston today, there is plenty to do!
February 15, 2003
When it is this cold out, the pelicans certainly seem to spend a lot of time inside - the island! They are floating around by the dozens on the various lagoons and ponds. Guess the water at the beach is too cold for them too!
February 14, 2003
It looks like another beautiful sunny day here on Kiawah - not bad for February weather! It is a chilly 36 degrees at 7:15 a.m. The high temperature should be in the upper fifties today.
The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition begins this weekend. It is an annual expo featuring original paintings, sculptures and carvings, photography, reproductions, wildlife crafts and collectibles, conservation exhibits, retriever demonstrations, a Sporting Classics sporting village and more.

A bobcat was spotted yesterday on the Kiawah Island Parkway. It was near the intersection of the parkway and Green Dolphin Way. Apparently it was out for its morning constitutional!
It was about 7:30 in the morning when it was spotted trotting across the road. After a brief stare at the crazy human in the stopped car, it sauntered into the trees lining the edge of the River Course. For a while we watched each other, the bobcat and I, as it casually wandered amongst the trees. Then it slowly ambled off, happily exploring the edge of the forest.
Visitors and residents alike are often fortunate to witness such events on our little island! Simply watch carefully and quietly and you may be privileged to see one of Kiawah's critters.
It is 39 degrees at 8:15 a.m. this morning. The high temperature is supposed to be near sixty today.

It is nearly time for "our" eaglet to test its wings for the first time. To that end, here is some important information for all of you eagle watchers out there:
During the 1st week of fledging the eaglet will also be learning to land on tree limbs. It may find it difficult! If an eaglet – A VERY LARGE BROWN BIRD WITH MASSIVE YELLOW FEET – is on the ground, it may need ‘rescue’. Phone the DNR for immediate ‘rescue’ assistance at 1-800-922-5431. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH THE EAGLET! Tell the guards immediately so they can cordon off the area.
There is also the risk of vehicle trauma. If an injured eagle is found, phone 843-528-3454, the Rescue Center for Injured Birds of Prey.
It is 43 degrees at 7:15 a.m. this morning. The high temperature should be in the mid-sixties by this afternoon.

Lots of golfers out yesterday, enjoying the semi-warm weather. Well, warm for February anyway! Today might be a little wet for golfing though, as it looks like thunderstorms are headed our way.
Many folks from Kiawah went to Bill Blizard's Meet the Artist" talk at the Charleston Visitor's Center. The Williams', the Zambitos, the Tedescos, the Fenwicks, and many others went to hear Bill. They were also treated to an impromptu harmonica show by Juke Joint Johnny. Guess lots of us are enjoying the Lowcountry Blues Bash this year!
It is 45 degrees at 7:15 a.m. this morning. The high temperature is supposed to be in the upper fifties, with a 70% chance of rain.
February 9, 2003
There are two "Kiawah Neighbor" items to report today.
Kiawahian Bob Meister ran the "Save The Lighthouse" Half Marathon at Folly Beach yesterday, and he won third in his age group. WAY TO GO BOB!
Another Kiawahian (is that really a word?), Bill Blizard, is giving a Meet the Artist" talk at the Charleston Visitor's Center today at 1:00 p.m. It is part of the Lowcountry Blues Bash. Come see Bill's photopaintings and meet some of the Blues musicians!
It is 39 degrees at 7:30 a.m. this morning, and it is a bit gray and dreary outside. The high temperature is supposed to reach fifty - does this sound like a broken record yet? Looks like rain is headed our way with an increasing chance as the day goes on.
February 8, 2003
This is one of Kiawah's many small lagoons and ponds. We are so fortunate that Kiawah has such an abundance of green this time of year! One of our island residents is pictured in the photo - can you catch a glimpse?
It is 39 degrees at 8:30 a.m. this morning. The high temperature is supposed to reach fifty - let us hope so! It is partly sunny right now and hopefully that will continue for us throughout the day.
February 7, 2003
Kiawah's eaglet was practicing its "wing working" again yesterday afternoon. It must be nearly ready to try its first flight now. More and more people are stopping to check on its progress - the guards at the front gate must wonder what we are all doing!
The Annual KICA Meeting and KINHC Nature Weekend will run from March 7th through March 10th. You can get more details by following either of the two links in the previous sentence.
It is 39 degrees at 8:15 a.m. this morning, with a high temperature in the mid-fifties. We are supposed to get more rain this morning - at least the ducks will be happy!
February 6, 2003
Mark your calendars! The Annual KICA Meeting and KINHC Nature Weekend will take place Friday, March 7th through Monday, March 10th. In addition to the meeting, there will be loads of activities for everyone - from a Community Celebration at the Sandcastle to nature and bicycle tours.

February 5, 2003
Have you been to this tower yet? It is a bit cool to go find it this morning, but perhaps later this afternoon it might be better.
Yesterday afternoon around 5:00 p.m. "our" eaglet was perched on the edge of the nest, flapping its wings like crazy. It is most likely close to 8 weeks old, so it is probably exercising its wings in preparation for fledging. Have you ever seen a bird's first flight?
It is 37 degrees at 7:30 a.m. this morning. Guess we are back to "normal" for this time of year. The high temperature today should be in the upper fifties. Tonight the low will be in the mid-thirties again, so stoke up those fireplaces!
February 4, 2003
The tower above is one of three "marsh towers" on Kiawah. The other two are equally as terrific for viewing stunning scenery. They are wonderful places to get away from it all. Do you know where to find all three of them?
It is 55 degrees at 7:15 a.m. this morning . The high temperature today is supposed to reach the mid-sixties. It looks like we will have rain, and the weather channel says we may even experience thunderstorms.
February 3, 2003
Today's new photo shows the tower at Marsh Island Park on Governor's Drive. From this tower you can see the Kiawah River and vast expanses of marsh. There are paths to walk and benches to sit upon - it is a wonderful place to visit. Have you been to this marsh tower?
It is 52 degrees this morning at 9:00 a.m. And our high temperature today is supposed to reach the mid-seventies! That's right, 70 degrees today! Get outside and enjoy it while it lasts!
February 2, 2003
Happy Groundhog Day! Only in the United States would we "trust" our weather predictions to a groundhog. J Incidentally, Punxsutawney Phil came out of his hideout in Gobblers Knob, Pennsylvania and predicted six more weeks of winter. Not on Kiawah though...where it is 45 degrees this morning at 9:00 a.m. Today's high temperature is supposed to reach 60 to 65 degrees. Wow! It certainly does not seem like winter here!
February 1, 2003
An eagle update: It has been confirmed by the SC Department of Natural Resources...<drum roll please>... "our" baby eaglet is THE FIRST ONE BORN IN THE ENTIRE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA THIS YEAR (this eagle nesting season)! Apparently everyone (including the eagles) finds Kiawah to be a great place to be!
Our contest is officially over! We had 408 entries. The winners will be drawn next week, selected by the four participants in this web site. If you are one of the winners, you will be notified. The names of the winners will be announced here, so keep a sharp eye out!
It is 44 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning. There is a slight chance of rain, and the high temperature should reach the high fifties or low sixties.
