December 31, 2002

Here we are at the end of another year - hard to believe it is New Year's Eve, is it not?  This is also the "first month anniversary" of this web site.  More than 1700 of you have paid us a visit!  Thank you for your support!

The temperature should reach the upper sixties today, with a small chance of showers.  Judging by the current gray skies, the showers are nearly here.

December 30, 2002

Once again we welcome another beautiful day of sunshine on Kiawah!  How lucky can you get?  The temperature should reach the mid-sixties again, so we have another opportunity to enjoy the outdoors today.

There is certainly much activity on the golf courses right now!  Perhaps those folks are trying out new clubs?  Or maybe they are getting in a few last rounds before 2003?  Who knows?  Why not get outside and enjoy yourself too?

December 29, 2002

It is a beautiful "sunshiny" day on the island today. The temperature should reach the mid-sixties, so it will be another terrific day to "get outside and play".

Here is another photo of the beach for all the Northerners out there who are still digging their way out!  Perhaps a little "beach time" will cheer you up.

December 28, 2002

It is another sunny, cool day here on Kiawah.  A mere 35 degrees at 8:00 a.m. this morning - brrrrrrrrr! But the sunshine is gorgeous, and will no doubt warm us up enough to venture outside.

The sunset yesterday was incredible.  As the sun went down the sky turned various hues of pink and purple, with just a dash or orange thrown in every now and then.  Nature certainly outdid herself last night!

December 27, 2002

Another "holiday survivor" was spotted early this morning - a wild turkey.  It was strutting around on Blue Heron Pond Road in The Preserve.  No doubt it was VERY happy find itself alive and well!

Despite the definite cold last night, the temperature should still reach the mid-fifties today.  A little sunshine would not be too bad either!

December 26, 2002

It is another beautiful day on the island, but beware the "hidden weather".  It is supposed to dip to the mid-thirties tonight!  Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!  Better get out those sweaters and grab some firewood to keep warm.

There are lots of folks on the island right now, no doubt enjoying their holidays.  We hope that you are enjoying your holidays as well!

December 25, 2002

The wind has been really blowing since late last night - Santa must have had a tough time on his sleigh!  There are branches and leaves littered everywhere - guess this afternoon's "entertainment" will include picking up the yard.

The temperature should reach the high 50's today, so folks should be outside enjoying the weather once their holiday celebrations are complete.

December 24, 2002

Here is the promised new beach picture.  Unfortunately the weather today is not as nice as the picture!

It should reach the mid to upper 60's again today, but there are already some light showers.

December 23, 2002

It is cool again this morning, but should reach the mid to upper 60's today.  Yesterday was breezy but beautiful; the surf was crashing furiously, and the branches on the trees were waving in the wind.

Lots of folks were riding bikes on the paths yesterday, apparently enjoying the lovely weather.

Check back tomorrow for a new beach picture!

December 22, 2002

It is another beautiful "sunshiny" day on Kiawah!  It is slightly cool this morning, but should reach the upper 60's today.  Bet there are lots of folks out and about today, enjoying this wonderful weather.

Kiawah's two resident bald eagles certainly enjoyed yesterday's sunshine - they were both spotted "hanging out" at their nest - one behind it and one on it.  Could it be that soon Kiawah will be home to MORE bald eagles?  Stay tuned!

December 21, 2002

Jack Frost who?? The rain has ceased and the sunshine is back "in force".  It is another glorious day on Kiawah!  There is a wee bit of a nip in the air this morning, but will be nearly 60 degrees today.  Yea!

The days start getting longer again, since today is the Winter Solstice.  More and more time to spend outside - on the beach, at the marsh, or just "tooling around" on the paths.  Enjoy the island!

December 20, 2002

Rain, rain, and more rain!  The sky is a gunmetal gray, and the leaves on the trees are being whipped around by the wind.  It seems that if Jack Frost cannot freeze the island, he will drench it!

Some folks are hopping into their cars this evening and headed to Kiawah for the holidays - be careful on those slippery roads!

December 19, 2002

Look at today's picture and pretend that you are driving up Main Road on your way to Kiawah - the road dappled with sunshine, birds serenading you as you drive through the live oaks and hanging Spanish moss.  Isn't life good?

This morning our fair island is drenched in rain, not sunshine! Today's high temperature should be near 70 degrees, and hopefully the rain will cease soon.

December 18, 2002

Kiawah's resident bald eagles were out and about yesterday afternoon - winging their way across the marsh near the front gate.  Seeing a majestic bald eagle in it's natural environment - diving and swooping or perching on a branch - makes us realize once again how lucky we are to live in paradise.

There are a few small showers this morning, but nothing serious.  And once again it should be near 60 degrees.

December 17, 2002

Lots of shells on the beach this morning - perhaps the rain from last week whipped up the surf enough to propel them to the surface?  Who knows?  But there are dozens of moon snails and clams scattered everywhere.

It is another cold morning but once again it is supposed to reach 60 as a high for the day- let us hope so!

December 16, 2002

Perched high atop a tree in the marsh, this egret seems to be surveying his kingdom.  These island residents were gathered in the marsh just before Cassique on the Kiawah Island Parkway.

It is a cold 40 degrees this morning but should reach 60 as a high for the day - another beautiful sunny December day on the island!

December 15, 2002

There was a terrific turn-out for the  Kiawah Island Marathon Saturday.  More than 3,000 runners showed up for the 25th annual running of the event. Click here to see photos of the event!

Many Kiawah residents volunteered to make the event a success.  Check out the photos - you might see someone you know!

December 14, 2002

The runners in today's Kiawah Island Marathon have received a chilly, windy day.  Highs will be in the mid-50s today.

Don't forget: The Kiawah Island Parkway is closed this morning from 8:00 until 8:15, from Sea Forest Drive to Governor's Drive.  This is to allow the runners to get on course.

If possible, do not go through that intersection until after that time.  Better still, stay on the island until the race is over - if you can - and cheer on the runners! Many of the runners are fulfilling a life-long goal this morning,  They will appreciate it more than you know!

December 13, 2002

The forecasters from yesterday were correct - it started raining late Thursday, and it is STILL raining! The raccoons wandering around earlier this morning looked like little drowned rats!

There is an "expo" at East Beach today and tomorrow morning, part of the Kiawah Island Marathon.  But you don't have to be a runner to attend.  There are loads of t-shirts, outdoor clothing, and tennis shoes if you want to go check it out.

Someone from this web site will be at the race tomorrow, so if you see a person with a camera, be sure to wave and smile!  You could be "famous" and wind up here on our web site!

December 12, 2002

It is just a bit warmer this morning than yesterday, with temperatures reaching near 60 degrees.

Forecasters are predicting that the rain will start again late this evening, raining most of the day Friday.

One resident near The Preserve was out and about this morning - a wild turkey!  Unfortunately it was too elusive to capture on film.  Perhaps another time it will be more cooperative!

December 11, 2002

Today's picture was taken at the bridge just before Mingo Point.

The rain is still with us this morning, and it is still windy.  But it should be a bit warmer than yesterday.

There should be approximately 3000 runners on the island Saturday morning, all of whom are wishing that this rain goes away before the Kiawah Island Marathon! Running in the rain - even on Kiawah - is not what most runners (or spectators!) prefer.

December 10, 2002

What a cold, drizzly day!  It is extremely windy today, and the temperature will only reach 50.  Sounds like a good day to stay inside by the fireplace and read a good book!

It is almost time for the annual Kiawah Island Marathon - if you don't have plans Saturday morning, come on out and support the runners.  They will appreciate it more than you know!

December 9, 2002

The birds are serenading the island this morning!  Riding down Governor's Drive you can hear the squawking of the egrets and the calling of the sea gulls.

The island is a bit cooler today, with temperatures reaching the mid-fifties. But once again the sunshine has come through for us, and the island looks warm and inviting.

December 8, 2002

The temperature should be near 60 again today, good news for all the folks who are out and about fetching Christmas trees and doing their holiday shopping.

Kiawah's critters were out in force as well - yesterday evening a bobcat was spotted crossing Governor's Drive, just beside 347.  Deer were foraging, raccoons were playing, and egrets were perching on the pine trees. Seems everyone is enjoying the lovely weather.

December 7, 2002

Today's picture shows the eagle's nest near the front gate.  Unfortunately no eagles were spotted today - perhaps they were out scouting for breakfast!

At last!  It is warmer today - the temperature should be near 60, with lots of wonderful Kiawah sunshine.

December 6, 2002

It is still cold on the island today, but at least it is not gray any longer!  It is a beautiful sunny day. The high tides the past few days have been VERY high.  The water on the causeway has covered all but the very tips of the marsh grass.

They're baaaaaaaaaack! Yes, that's right!   Kiawah Island is once again the home of two magnificent bald eagles.  They have "moved in" to an old osprey nest just before the front gate.  No doubt they are shivering in their nest today though.

Eagles typically lay their eggs after Thanksgiving, and the eggs hatch in late January.  Perhaps Kiawah will soon be home to baby eaglets.

December 5, 2002

Is it possible that it is even colder today than yesterday?  Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr!  Our normally tropical isle has turned into an "island-cicle" just like most of the rest of the Southeast.

So far it is just cold for us though, no snow...yet! It is raining though, so be careful on the roads today.

December 4, 2002

A very brisk cold front swept across the island last night.  Branches and leaves littered across the streets are evidence. It is also bringing "shallow coastal flooding" and rain later today.

The tree lighting ceremony was very well-attended yesterday evening.  The area around the Inn looks beautiful swathed in tiny white lights.  Click here to see a few photos of the event.

The Town of Kiawah Island elections are over - and the unofficial results are:

Mayor - Bill Wert

Council Positions - Don McIver, Steve Orban, Leo Fishman, and Rich Bennett

December 3, 2002

Kiawah is still pretty frosty this morning! But once again it is a beautiful sunny day.  Nice that the weather is cooperating, since there are lots of "goings-on" today.

The Town of Kiawah Island is holding elections, with the polls in the regular place - the fire station on Sora Rail.

And tonight is the tree lighting ceremony to "officially" kick off the holiday season here on the island.

December 2, 2002

It's a frigid day on Kiawah today - a frost warning last night was very accurate.  But it certainly looks like another beautiful sunny day here on the island.
