September 29, 2006  Week-end Edition

Kiawah is cool and sunny this morning. It feels like fall outside, and that should continue throughout the week-end.  Let's see if we have this straight: sun-drenched beaches with light cool breezes, and warm days with cool nights.  Can you think of any place more perfect?  See you on the beach!

Don't Forget: Friday is the last day to register as a candidate for elections for the Town of Kiawah Island.  You can register before noon at Town Hall or via the Town's web site.

Your friendly neighborhood bobcat says hello! This bobcat photo was taken in mid-September near The Preserve.  Bobcats are one of Kiawah's most elusive residents - many people live on the island for years without spotting one! Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.

Week-end Weather: It is 64 degrees at 9:10 Friday morning. The high Friday will be in the upper seventies, the low near sixty. Saturday will be Friday's twin, with a high in the upper seventies, and a low in the mid-sixties.  We should see another repeat on Sunday, with a high near eighty, a low in the lower sixties.

Astronomy 101: Tonight is the Full Corn Moon.  It was so named by Native Americans to indicate that cornan Indian staplewas ready for gathering.  The full moon occurring nearest to the autumn equinox is known as the Harvest Moon; one out of three years it comes in October instead of September, and this is one of those years — just in case you were wondering why this month's moon is not the Harvest Moon. The Moon will be at perigee later than normal this time, at 11:00 p.m., at a distance of 221,938 miles from Earth.  As such, this will be the biggest and brightest Full Moon of 2006. The best viewing should be when the full moon rises around 8 p.m.  Very high tides can be expected from the coincidence of perigee with full Moon.

*** Happy Labor Day! ***

It is overcast on Kiawah this morning, with thunder rumbling in the background.

Here's hoping that you enjoy your holiday.

Did you know? The first Labor Day celebration was September 15, 1882 in New York City and was organized by the Central Labor Union. Oregon was the first state to pass a bill to designate Labor Day on February 21, 1887. It was first proposed as "a street parade to exhibit to the public the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations."  Congress made the first Monday in September an official Labor Day holiday on June 28, 1894.

Kiawah Skies Kiawah is overcast this morning, so we probably won't have this type of sunset this evening.  But perhaps this photo will do until our skies clear and we see the sun again! Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.

Kiawah is sunny, breezy, and cool this morning after our visit from Ernesto. We were lucky to receive only rain from the storm, as the winds were not strong enough to knock down anything  more than a few palm fronds here and there. The shelling should be perfect today, since the waves were so whipped up during the storm.  Head on out before the Saturday check-in to find the best shells!  See you on the beach!

Turtle Update: Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol reports 192 nests, 3 hatched "short stakes" and 3 hatched "wild" nests. Short stakes are areas where the nesting patrol thought a nest was likely, but could not locate the egg chamber.  Wild nests are nests that were not located by the nesting patrol.  Kiawah's final nest number total: 198.

Week-end Weather: It is 76 degrees at 9:10 Friday morning.  It looks like it will be a fairly dry week-end.  Friday's high should be in the mid-eighties, with a low in the low seventies.  There is a 20% chance of rain on Saturday, highs in the upper eighties, lows in the upper seventies.  Sunday is supposed to be an exact repeat of Saturday, with a 20% chance of showers, a high in the upper eighties, and lows in the upper seventies.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Tropical Storm Ernesto kept all critters and humans indoors yesterday, though there were two pelicans fishing in the waves at one point.
