October 31,
2006
Halloween has dawned beautifully - sunny and
warm. We get zero trick-or-treaters on Kiawah, but please be careful
driving, especially off island. You never know when a goblin will
appear!
Did you know? "Soul food" has
been at the heart of the mischief and merriment made on Halloween night
for hundreds of years. We're not talking about ham hocks and collard
greens either! The treats offered on October 31st can be traced to the
ancient Celtic celebration of Samhain, a major pagan holiday that marked
the start of the new year on their calendar. The November 1st festival was
a time to gather the harvest and prepare for winter, but also when the
souls of the dead returned to the earthly world - or so the Celts
believed. To keep the ghosts at bay, the Celts would place offerings of
food and drink outside their homes.

October 27, 2006 Week-end
Edition
Last night's showers arrived a bit late, so
it is raining on Kiawah this morning. The weather service says that Friday
will be soggy all day, so it would seem that a good book is in order.
What are you reading these days?
Don't Forget!

plan to be out & about, a light jacket may be in order. Will you be
going outside to play today?

Kiawah is covered with sunshine this morning, and
once again is C-O-L-D!

why not bundle up and enjoy the sunshine?

Kiawah sunny this morning and C-O-L-D!
Apologies to you Northern folks, but in October Kiawah is still supposed
to be in the upper seventies. Brrrrrr! If you plan to head to
the beach, golf course, or tennis courts today, dress warmly!

Week-end Edition
Kiawah is partly sunny this morning, and
apparently more sunshine is on the way. Cooler weather is on the way, with
"open window sleeping weather" Friday & Saturday night. Isn't it
great when you can sleep with your windows open? The frogs,
crickets, and an occasional owl serenade you to sleep, and birdsong wakes
you in the morning. Don't you think that is far better than an alarm
clock?
Astronomy 101:
Saturday and Sunday the Orionids meteor showers will be in town. They
are comparatively small showers, with 15 to 25 meteors per hour. For best
viewing, take a beach towel or a lawn chair out to the beach and look to
the South between 2 and 4 a.m. If the weather cooperates, you will see
swift streaks of light flash through the sky. If you go Sunday night, you
may need a second blanket to keep yourself warm!
American Heart Association Calendar
John Oakley of Kiawah Island Real Estate sends this photo

The skies over Kiawah are overcast again this morning.

Week-end Edition
There is a hide-and-seek game going on this
morning on Kiawah - between the sun and the clouds. It is quite cool
outside too. Not exactly a beach day, is it? Well, not a swimming
day perhaps, but a terrific day to walk or ride on the beach.
Spooky... Do
you have triskaidekaphobia? If so, today is your least favorite day.
The definition of triskaidekaphobia is "fear of the number 13" but is
generally used to refer to the fear of the inauspicious date Friday
the 13th. Here's hoping that today's 13th is a lucky one!

It is overcast on Kiawah this morning. It was so
cool last night that lots of folks had their windows
open. No air conditioner hums last night! Just the hooting of
the owls across the marsh, the occasional squawk of a disturbed heron, and
a concerto of frogs and crickets. Is there anything better than waking up
to birdsong in the morning?
Cinder Creek at high tide
Joe Zambito took this photo of Cinder Creek. That in itself doesn't seem
exceptional, but he took it from the third hole at Osprey Point golf

It is another terrific day on Kiawah!
Has the weather ever been more perfect than it has been this past week?
And today is once again sunny and beautiful.
Astronomy 101:
Tonight is
the Full Harvest Moon. This is the
full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox. Usually the full
Moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each night, but for the few
nights around the Harvest Moon, the Moon seems to rise at nearly the
same time each night: just 25 to 30 minutes later across the U.S., and
only 10 to 20 minutes later for much of Canada and Europe. Corn,
pumpkins, squash, beans, and wild rice the chief Indian staples are
now ready for gathering.
