It is partly cloudy on Kiawah this morning, and already warm.  Some showers are just off the coast, with a slight possibility of dumping a little rain.  We could really use some, though it wouldn't be popular with the beach-goers!

Weather: It is 77 degrees at 9:15 this morning. The high should be in the in the low eighties again, lows near seventy.  There is a 20% chance of showers today and this evening.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One American alligator, two five-lined skinks, one great blue heron, eight brown pelicans, one raccoon, one osprey, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

Were you able to get outside and play this week-end?  The weather certainly cooperated!  Today looks to be bringing more of the same.  See you on the beach?

Weather: It is 75 degrees at 9:15 this morning. It would seem that we have another marvelous day in store for us, with a high  in the low eighties, and a low near seventy.

Kiawah is sunny and warm this morning.  High temperatures will once again be the order of the day today.  Luckily for us, the humidity seems to be relatively low, so we shouldn't suffer too badly in the heat!  What will you do to "beat the heat" today?  Ride a bike?  Swim?  Or perhaps just walk along the beach?  Whatever you choose, today is bound to be a fantastic day to get outside and play!

Some folks will be traveling to the island or home for the long weekend, so please be careful on the roads.

Weather: It is 77 degrees at 9:30 this morning. More fabulous weather is on the way today, as highs reach the mid-eighties, and lows are in the upper sixties.

May 26, 2006 Week-end Edition

Memorial Day

It is another beautiful, "sun-shiny" day on Kiawah.  The humidity is hanging in the air this morning, making it much muggier than normal for this time of year.  Still, it is a very nice day to "go outside and play"!  So drag out your walking shoes, bike, or whatever, and have some fun!

Some folks will be traveling to the island or home for the long weekend, so please be careful on the roads.

Week-end Weather: It is 79 degrees at 9:15 Friday morning. The high Friday should be in the mid-eighties with a 40% chance of thunderstorms.  The chance drops to 20% Friday evening, lows in the low seventies.   We should have a repeat on Saturday, with highs in the mid-eighties and lows in the low seventies.  The chance of rain will still be around, 30% during the day and 20% at night.  Sunday's high is supposed to be in the low eighties with a 20% chance of showers.  Lows in the upper sixties.

Kiawah is already fairly warm this morning.  Not much of a breeze out there either, though the beach is a bit windy.  Another lovely day is in store for us!

The paths and the beach have been getting more and more visitors these past few days, as folks here for Memorial Day arrive to soak up the sun.

It is beautiful and sunny on Kiawah this morning. We had a high of just over 80 yesterday, and today will be more of the same.  Looks like a great day to head to the beach!

  Turtle News: As of May 21st, there are ten loggerhead sea turtle nests on Kiawah's beach.

May 23, 2006

The sun cannot seem to decide if it should stay out or hide in the clouds this morning, so Kiawah is bright and sunny and cloudy by turns. We did receive some thunderstorms yesterday, and even a bit of hail for a brief period.  Here's hoping that storm front has passed! 

Turtle News: As of May 21st, there are ten loggerhead sea turtle nests on Kiawah's beach. 

Blue Heron Pond in The Preserve The marsh tower in The Preserve provides a wonderful view of Blue Heron Pond.  Bill Johnson says his favorite thing to do on Kiawah is to ride bikes and observe wildlife.  Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.

Kiawah is bright and sunny this morning, but clouds are hanging in the sky. The Weather Channel says there is a possibility of potentially damaging thundershowers today, so get outside early, just in case! 

Turtle News: True to form, the mama loggerheads have once again started their nesting on Kiawah around Mother's Day. The first nest was laid May 17th.  It's turtle time! 

Weather: It is 78 degrees at 9:00 this morning. The high is supposed to be in the low eighties, and there is a 30% chance of thunderstorms.  Tonight's low should be in the near ninety and low in the upper sixties, with the chance of showers falling to 20%.

May 19, 2006 Week-end Edition

It is a marvelous morning on Kiawah!  The sun is shining brightly and there is not a cloud in the sky. The birds are singing happily, twittering amongst the tree limbs. It seems we are headed into a warm sunny week-end - yea! Are you headed for the beach?

Turtle News: True to form, the mama loggerheads have once again started their nesting on Kiawah around Mother's Day. The first nest was laid May 17th.  It's turtle time! 

Week-end Weather: It is 75 degrees at 9:20 Friday morning. It looks like a terrific week-end is in store for Kiawah!  The high Friday should be in the mid-eighties, the low in the mid-sixties.  Saturday will be even warmer, as the high approaches ninety!  The low is supposed to be in the upper sixties.  Sunday is an exact repeat, with a high near ninety and low in the upper sixties. 

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two black-crowned night herons, two anoles, three really FAT five-lined skinks, two Carolina wrens, two raccoons, one male and one female cardinal, several red-winged blackbirds, two white-tailed deer, three American alligators, one osprey, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

May 18, 2006

The Kiawah Symphony Choir was singing quite loudly this morning.  Did you hear it? The frogs in the marsh were croaking the bass, while the birds provided varying levels of alto and soprano voices.  One particularly enthusiastic Carolina wren was the soloist this morning, belting out tunes like Ethel Merman.  How can such a minuscule creature have such a HUGE voice?    

Island News: KICA has completed the Kiawah Island Parkway paving project!  Hip hip hooray! There are a few final items to complete, such as painting the striping, arrows, etc., but otherwise DONE!  J

Kiawah is still doing its best imitation of paradise this morning - the sun is shining brightly and the birds are all a-twitter. It should be a perfect day to get outside and play!    

Island News: KICA is in the final stages of the parkway paving. Work begins at 8:00 p.m., and ends at 6:00 a.m. Please be prepared for delays if you are out & about on the island between those hours. Our recent rainy weather has impacted the schedule but KICA hopes to finish this evening.

Weather: It is 65 degrees at 9:10 this morning. Today's high is supposed to be near eighty, and the low in the upper fifties. Perfect sleeping weather anyone?

We have lovely sunny spring weather on Kiawah this morning. The flora is delightful and green and the critters are happy and frolicking, so all must be right with Kiawah!

Weather: It is 61 degrees at 9:10 this morning. Kiawah is back to its normal sunny self today - yea! The high should be in the mid-seventies and the low in the low sixties.

May 15, 2006

We have showers on Kiawah this morning. Apparently Mother Nature is now sending us all of the April showers that never materialized last month.    

Island News: KICA is in the final stages of the parkway paving. Work begins at 8:00 p.m., and ends at 6:00 a.m. Please be prepared for delays if you are out & about on the island between those hours.  If the weather holds, KICA hoped to finish by tomorrow, but no doubt the weather will delay that a bit.

Weather: It is 64 degrees at 9:15 this morning. It looks as if today will be a rainy day in Camelot. The high is supposed to be in the mid-seventies and the low in the upper fifties. A 40% chance of rain continues throughout the day and evening.

May 12, 2006   Week-end Edition

Kiawah is covered in sunshine this morning - at last!  We have had cloudy week, so the sun is certainly welcome. The week-end will begin with a bang, as we get sunshine and warm temperatures through Saturday evening.  Looks like some rain is on the way for later in the week-end though, so get your beach time in early!  

Astronomy 101: The Full Flower Moon will be Saturday night. In most areas, flowers are abundant everywhere during this time. Thus, the name of this Moon. Other names include the Full Corn Planting Moon, or the Milk Moon

Island News: KICA is in the final stages of the parkway paving. Work will be suspended Friday & Saturday evenings, but start again Sunday at 8:00 p.m., ending Monday morning at 6:00 a.m. Please be prepared for delays if you are out & about on the island between those hours.  If the weather holds, KICA hopes to finish by Tuesday of next week.

Week-end Weather: It is 64 degrees at 9:10 Friday morning. The high Friday is supposed to be near eighty, with lows in the mid-fifties.  Saturday's high should also be near eighty, with a low in the low sixties.  A 30% chance of rain creeps in Saturday evening, increasing to 50% Sunday.  The high Sunday should be in the low seventies and the low in the upper fifties.

May 11, 2006 

The sun is making a guest appearance on Kiawah this morning. It is warm and sunny on the island now.  The humidity is very much in evidence - it will almost be a relief when it does begin to rain.  For now though, the ceiling fans get turned to high and the windows thrown open.  Few enough days remain before summer truly arrives and the air conditioner is a must!

A painted bunting visits Glossy Ibis Lane Painted buntings are not often seen, but sometimes you get lucky! This one was having lunch on Glossy Ibis Lane at the Zambito house. His mate was also spotted, but wasn't disposed to allow a photograph alongside him. May 10, 2006 

Though the sun made a valiant attempt at pushing through the clouds this morning, it would seem another cloudy day is in store. It looks like Kiawah will be gray for a little while longer.

Two black-crowned night herons were hanging out in a lagoon next to Governor's Drive yesterday evening.  This is not a bird that you typically see on Kiawah!  Remember to check Today's Kiawah Critter Count to see what has been spotted on Kiawah recently.  And if you spot a Kiawah critter yourself, let us know and we will include it in the count!

May 9, 2006 

It is gray and cloudy on Kiawah again this morning. There is just a hint of rain in the air too.  It does not appear that today will be the best of days to be a beach-goer!     

Weather: It is 59 degrees at 9:10 this morning. Looks like we have another cloudy day ahead of us. We should see a high in the mid-seventies, and a low in the low sixties.  There is a 10% chance of showers.

May 8, 2006 

Kiawah is gray and overcast this morning.  It is not currently raining, but it certainly looks like it will!

Have you seen the wild berries along many of Kiawah's paths?  They are dewberries, and they are starting to ripen now.  If you have never had them, they taste something like blackberries.  Though if you decide to pick some for yourself, watch out!  Many of Kiawah's critters lurk underneath or nearby the berry vines.  A berry, no matter how yummy, is worth running into an alligator!

Weather: It is 61 degrees at 9:10 this morning. A cloudy day is in store for us, but the Weather Channel shows no chance of showers. The high today is supposed to be in the mid-seventies, the low in the low sixties.

May 5, 2006  Week-end Edition

It is another marvelous day on Kiawah.  The sun is out in full force, the birds are singing happily, and it is the week-end! J Are you ready for it?

Island News: The LPA Group will be performing, borings along the Kiawah Island Parkway between the Roundabout and the Main Gate, Friday, May 5th, between 9am and 3:30pm. One lane of traffic will be kept open during this time. While delays will be kept to a minimum, please allow additional travel time in the morning and drive with care in the work zones. 

Astronomy 101:The Eta Aquarids meteor showers can be seen Friday night. They are a relatively small shower, with 20 to 40 meteors per hour. The meteors should have very swift, long paths.  Optimum viewing will be towards the Southeast between 2 and 4 a.m. So find a place with a clear view of the sky and grab a chair or blanket and watch the show!

Week-end Weather: It is 72 degrees at 9:15 Friday morning.  There is a slight chance of rain throughout the week-end, but temperatures should be in the upper seventies all week-end long.  Friday's high temperature is supposed to be in the upper seventies with lows in the mid-sixties.  There is a 40% chance of showers during the day and evening.  The possibility of rain drops to 20% for Saturday, with a high in the mid-seventies and lows in the mid-sixties.  Sunday should see highs in the mid-seventies and lows in the mid-sixties with a 40% chance of showers.

May 4, 2006 

Sunshine and light breezes will be the order of the day on Kiawah today.  It is already in the seventies and headed into the eighties - a great day to explore the island!

Kildeer Pond and the Nature Trail in The Preserve are quite beautiful today.  If you have not ever visited there, take a little trip over and walk on the trails.  There are birds galore on Kildeer Pond, and you may even be fortunate enough to see herons and egrets.  If you are VERY quiet, you may even spot a bobcat!  A marsh tower is tucked away in a little corner, and it has fabulous views of the marsh.  Are you adventurous enough to go find it?

May 3, 2006 

Kiawah is sunny and gorgeous this morning - another amazing day in Camelot.  The magnolias and oleanders are just beginning to parade their blossoms, and soon we will be treated to yet another of Mother Nature's flowery displays.  Are plants and flowers strutting their stuff where you are?

Weather: It is 64 degrees at 9:00 this morning.  We are on our way to a marvelous day, with a high in the low eighties and the low in the low sixties.

May 2, 2006 

May is certainly getting a beautiful start this year.  Once again we have a lovely cool morning with loads of sunshine.  Kiawah is dressed in her spring best!

Weather: It is 61 degrees at 9:15 this morning.  It would seem that we have yet another lovely spring day. Today is supposed to bring highs in the low seventies and lows in the low sixties.

May 1, 2006 

Happy May Day!  It is a perfect first of May on Kiawah, with sunshine galore. We didn't have very many April showers, but hopefully we will still see loads of May flowers...
