March 31, 2006  Week-end Edition

Mother Nature is ushering in a lovely week-end for Kiawah. It is sunny and warm, with just a slight breeze.  The birds are performing a concerto just for you, right outside your window!  If you listen closely you can hear cardinals, Carolina titmice, yellow-rumped warblers, and an occasional blue jay.  Not bad for a free concert!

Island News #1: The Kiawah Island Parkway detour is currently between Sea Forest and Sora Rail. As there is no way to detour in that location, a flagman will be directing traffic through a single lane. The detour will move to Sanctuary Drive and Green Dolphin Way beginning Monday, April 3rd.

Be sure to plan for extra driving time during the next few weeks, as KICA completes work on a curb project. If you have any questions, please call Huggie Hindman or Connie Samford at 843-768-2315.

Island News #2: KICA is experiencing technical difficulties with their e-mail list due to a recent change in telephone/internet service provider.  They hope to have it corrected soon.

Island News #2 - 3/31/06 6:30 p.m. update: The KICA e-mail list is now functioning again.  Thank you for your patience!

Week-end Weather: It is a warm 70 degrees at 9:10 Friday morning. We are expecting a very warm, but partly cloudy, week-end on Kiawah.  The story? A high on Friday in the low seventies and a low in the upper fifties.  Saturday brings a repeat of Friday, with highs in the low seventies and lows in the upper fifties.  Last but not least, Sunday's high should be near eighty (!), with lows in the upper fifties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One pileated woodpecker, two anoles, three cardinals, two Carolina titmice, five or six yellow-rumped warblers, one blue jay, three double-crested cormorants, two osprey, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

March 30, 2006

It is another glorious spring day on Kiawah! Not only are Kiawah's plants blooming to beat the band, but our critters seem to be parading about the island as well. Today's photo is proof: there were actually two pileated woodpeckers, though it was impossible to capture both on film.

Kiawah is sunny this morning, but not terribly warm. We are certainly having an interesting start to spring this year.  Or is it the old saying, "in like a lion and out like a lamb" has been turned around on us?  It was certainly beautiful and warm the first day of March this year.  Does that mean we are going to have the lion at the end of the month?

The predicted rain never really showed this week-end, though high winds Saturday evening and Sunday have brought us slightly cooler temperatures. Kiawah is overcast this morning, with light sprinkles in some places.  It looks like today will be a day for inside tasks, as more rain is on the way. The spring plantings are beginning to "strut their stuff", with daffodils popping up here and there.  The sweet grass is starting to grow longer too.  Soon Kiawah will be covered with signs of spring.  What newly sprouted greenery have you spotted lately?

** Happy St. Patrick's Day **

Kiawah is beautiful and sunny again this morning.  St. Patty has obviously ordered a fabulous day for everyone! Kiawah is certainly practicing the "wearin' o' the green" these days, as it turns greener and greener.

There are big happenings on the island this week-end, as KICA brings us Celebrate Kiawah! Saturday.  Mingling with your neighbors, poolside dancing and dinner are planned - what more could you ask for on a sunny Saturday afternoon? See the Meetings or Something Fun To Do Today sections for more information.  Sunday is KICA's annual meeting - view the proposals in the Meetings section as well.

March 16, 2006

It is sunny on Kiawah this morning once again. Looks like another beautiful day on the island!  This is the time of year when our lovely live oaks become the scourge of gardens - and gardeners!  March's "lion" winds have scattered the dead leaves everywhere. And except for an hour or two when the yard looks nice, raking does not do much good! The leaves just seem to keep coming down.  On the other hand, the azaleas certainly look beautiful with their blossoms beginning to bloom.

Island News: The detour along Greensward Road is expected to remain until sometime Monday afternoon, 3/20/06.  Be sure to plan for extra driving time during the next few weeks, as KICA begins a curb replacement project today. The Full Worm Moon over Kiawah's Beach Tuesday's Full Worm Moon was really something to see! It rose just after 6:30 p.m., and luckily the cloud cover did not obscure the view. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.

March 14, 2006

Last night's winds brought clouds to our fair island, so Kiawah overcast this morning.  Rain seems to be headed our way, bringing cooler temperatures for the remainder of the week.  Still, mid-sixties in early March isn't so bad, is it?

Astronomy 101: Tonight is the Full Worm Moon - doesn't sound very appetizing, does it? Indians named it this because as the temperature begins to warm and the ground begins to thaw, earthworm casts appear, heralding the return of the robins. The more northern tribes knew this Moon as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signaled the end of winter; or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night. The Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is another variation. To the settlers, it was also known as the Lenten Moon, and was considered to be the last full Moon of winter.  Bring on spring!

Island Happenings:  Did you attend the Big Band concert at East Beach conference center Saturday evening? It was sponsored by the Town of Kiawah Island Arts Council, and included the Carolina Jazz Big Band and vocalist Anne Caldwell.  More than 200 people were privileged to hear both, as Kiawah was "jazzed" for a night!  Thanks to the Arts Council for bringing these folks out to Kiawah.  There was no need to drive to Charleston Saturday night!

One of Kiawah's celebrated painted buntings  Marilyn Blizard says, "Get your bird feeder ready with millet seed.  The painted buntings will be migrating back to Kiawah soon & might become your charming visitors from spring through summer."
