January 31, 2006

We have sunshine on Kiawah this morning, but much cooler than recent mornings.  Today should be bright and sunny, though perhaps a bit windy, especially this morning.

Last night's small hail never materialized, though the strong winds certainly did!  Just look around the island for the evidence: leaves strewn everywhere, branches and palm fronds scattered across lawns, and even deck furniture overturned.

Don't Forget!  Today at 10:00 there is a public meeting about the erosion on Kiawah's beach.  Check the Meeting Notices section for more details.

Weather:  It is 46 degrees at 9:15 this morning. Today's high should be in the low sixties. The low tonight is supposed to be in the low forties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One male and four female hooded mergansers, two American alligators, three great blue herons, three double-crested cormorants, and dozens of snowy egrets.

January 30, 2006

Kiawah is cloudy this morning, but very warm. More odd January weather... Even more odd is the chance of hail this evening.  Warm, cold, sunny, cloudy, dry, thundershowers... Is this the price we pay for such fabulous weather this month?

Don't Forget!  Tuesday January 31st at 10:00 there is a public meeting about the erosion on Kiawah's beach.  Check the Meeting Notices section for more details.

Best Pals? Betsey Porter says this alligator was around over on Surfsong every day her family was here. This time it even had a buddy - the turtle! Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.

Weather:  It is 63 degrees at 9:20 this morning. The high today is supposed to be in the upper sixties with a 30% chance of showers. Tonight's low should be in the mid-forties with a 50% chance of thunderstorms.  The storms *may* produce gusty winds and small hail, so if you are out & about this evening, please be careful!

Week-end Kiawah Critter Count: Spotted at various times & places around the island over the week-end: One nonchalant bobcat strolling through a backyard on Marsh Island Drive, nine male and five female hooded mergansers, three American alligators, six great blue herons, seven double-crested cormorants, and dozens of snowy egrets.

Kiawah is sunny but cool this morning.  This morning the sky was beautiful - painted in pinks and pale oranges across the horizon.  Kiawah is fortunate to have some of the most wonderful sunrises and sunsets...have you treated yourself to one lately?

Sunshine has arrived on the island again, and Kiawah is beautiful this morning.  It looks like winter is sneaking back though, as temperatures tonight will once again be in the thirties.  But don't you think our January weather has been marvelous?

Beast in the Jungle Joe Zambito has been playing with his new Nikon D70 again!  He sends us this photo of an anole. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.

Kiawah is still being stalked by "little cat feet" this morning.  The island is gray and overcast, but fairly warm.

Last night the Lowcountry was fogged in completely!  If you drove over one of the higher bridges, you were encased in a cloud as you picked your way across. Spooky!

Weather:  It is 59 degrees at 9:15 this morning.  The high today is supposed to be in the mid-sixties.  Tonight's low should be in the mid-forties. There is a 30% chance of showers today.

There is no sunshine on the island, but it is quite warm. It is a Carl Sandburg kind of morning on Kiawah this morning.  In tribute to his famous poem, here it is for your reading pleasure...

Fog

The fog comes
on little cat feet.
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.

                              Carl Sandburg

The fog should burn off later this morning, but hopefully will NOT be replaced with showers.

Weather:  It is 50 degrees at 9:00 this morning.  Today's high should be in the mid-sixties.  The low tonight is supposed to be in the mid-fifties.   There is a 50% chance of rain both today and tonight.

January 20, 2006 Week-end Edition

Kiawah is covered in sunshine again this morning.  It certainly seems that we will have a lovely warm day today, and possibly through the week-end.

Yesterday was a tad breezy but beautiful; the surf was crashing, and the branches on the trees were waving in the wind.  Lots of people took advantage of the sunshine to get out and about on the island.  Did you?

Christmas Morning on Kiawah Bob Struble shares this photo. Bob says "Christmas morning on Kiawah and is that "white dew" or actually, <gulp>, frost on the spartina?" Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.

January 19, 2006

Kiawah is sunny this morning, and when you look outside, it seems to be a warm, beautiful day.  But looks can be deceiving!  It is chilly this morning.  Things are supposed to warm up though, and this afternoon should be a fabulous time to get outside without layers and layers of clothing.  How about another warm day in January?

Weather:  It is 45 degrees at 9:10 this morning.  The high today should be in the mid-sixties.  Tonight's low is supposed to be in the low forties.

January 18, 2006

It is sunny on Kiawah this morning, but we are back to cooler temperatures.  After yesterday's warm seventy degrees, mid-fifties is going to feel a bit chilly, especially with the winds.

High winds arrived on Kiawah last night. Leaves and branches have been scattered over everything - roads, yards, paths...  They are supposed to stick around until 4pm or so, with gusts potentially reaching 40 miles per hour.  Be careful out there!

Kiawah is partly sunny this morning.  Today will be another wonderful warm day, with temperatures near seventy.  Will you be out & about to enjoy the day?

Last night's sunset was amazing!   The sky was a mixture of fluorescent orange and pink -  orange sherbet orange and bubblegum pink - with the edges turning to dark purple and blue.  Why do you never have a camera when this happens?

Weather:  It is 59 degrees at 9:10 this morning.  The high today should be in the upper sixties.  Tonight's low is supposed to be in the low forties.

January 16, 2006

The skies over Kiawah are a dull gunmetal gray this morning. It is fairly warm though, especially given the winds and temperatures over the week-end. Cooler temperatures hung around Saturday after the thunderstorms and strong winds Friday night. But it appears that our warm weather isn't over quite yet.  Not bad for January, eh?

January 13, 2006  Week-end Edition

It is foggy on Kiawah again this morning. It is starting to burn off though.  This week-end should be the last hurrah for the wonderful warm temperatures we have had this January. Have you enjoyed this break from winter?

Astronomy 101 Saturday brings us the Full Wolf Moon, so named because wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter. Sometimes it was also referred to as the Old Moon, or the Moon After Yule. Some called it the Full Snow Moon, but most tribes applied that name to the next Moon.

Week-end Weather:   Friday morning it is still a warm 57 degrees at 9:00. We should see a high in the mid-sixties Friday, with a 40% chance of rain. Lows are supposed to be in the low forties with a 60% chance of showers. There is a high probability of thunderstorms after midnight, with a possibility of damaging winds.  The storms are supposed to cool things off dramatically, with Saturday's temperatures reaching into the mid-fifties during the day and dropping near thirty that night.  Sunday's high should be in the upper fifties, with lows in the  mid-thirties.  *** PLANT WATCH ***

January 12, 2006

It is another lovely Kiawah morning! It was a Carl Sandburg kind of morning on the island. Fog curled around the base of the trees, hovering over the lagoons, drifting lazily across the water.  Most of it is burned off now, as the temperature should be in the sixties today. Do you have plans to get outside and play?

January 6, 2006 Week-end Edition

Kiawah is back to her normal "sunshiny" self this morning. It is a wee bit chilly when you walk outside, but you could easily do your morning walk in a sweatshirt.  Isn't this why we all love living in South Carolina?  Who says it is winter?

Week-end Weather: It is 45 degrees at 9:15 Friday morning. Friday's temperatures should range from a high in the low fifties to lows near thirty. Saturday is supposed to bring more of the same, with highs in the low fifties and low in the low thirties.  The end of the week-end will be slightly warmer though!  Sunday should have a high in the low sixties and a low in the low forties.

January 5, 2006

Kiawah is a tad gray and overcast this morning, but fairly warm.  It would seem that despite the potential showers, Mother Nature is still giving us nice warm weather.

Free tickets: Have you picked up your tickets to the January 22nd ballet performance on Kiawah yet?  They are available at the Town Hall.  For more information on the performance, check the Something Fun To Do Today link below.

Hangin' Around This photo was taken on Glossy Ibis.  Joe Zambito says this creative raccoon hangs around his place a lot, looking for grub.  Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.

January 4, 2006

We have more sunshine on Kiawah this morning, but it is a bit cooler than recent mornings.  Still not as cold as you might expect for January, but definitely not the balmy temperatures we have been seeing.

Astronomy 101: The Quadrantids meteor shower will strut it's stuff tonight.  The best viewing time is 4 to 6 a.m. If you head outside and look to the Northeast, you should see 60 to 120 medium speed meteors per hour. The best place on Kiawah to watch for meteors is the beach because of the unobstructed view of the sky.  So arrange a few chairs or some other comfortable rest, dress warmly, take a blanket and enjoy!

Weather: It is 45 degrees at 9:05 this morning. Today's high should be in the low sixties. The low tonight is supposed to be in the mid-forties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Another pile o'gators at Osprey Point, two great blue herons, one white-tailed deer, five hooded mergansers, three double-crested cormorant, and dozens of snowy egrets.

January 3, 2006

Kiawah has lots of sunshine this morning, a welcome relief after yesterday's showers and strong winds.  Though there was a tornado watch for much of the afternoon and evening, Kiawah was fortunate not to see any.

You may have noticed that the web site was down earlier this morning.  Internet access all over Kiawah was interrupted this morning. Thankfully it is corrected now, and should be fine.

Weather: It is 65 degrees at 11:00 this morning. The high today is supposed to be in the upper sixties. Tonight's low should be in the upper forties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Three American alligators, one great blue heron, two white-tailed deer, one very wet raccoon, three hooded mergansers, one double-crested cormorant, and dozens of snowy egrets.

January 2, 2006

Kiawah awoke to rain and gray skies this morning, as showers work their way down the coast.  It doesn't look like too many golf or tennis games will take place today.

Hope you had a terrific New Year's!  The weather on Kiawah this week-end was superb.  Folks were out on the paths, golf courses, and tennis courts as temperatures reached almost 70 degrees.  What a terrific way to start 2006!

Weather: It is 64 degrees at 9:20 this morning. Today's high should be in the upper sixties with a 90% chance of rain. This afternoon winds could gust up to 30 mph.  The low tonight is supposed to be in the mid-fifties.

Week-end Kiawah Critter Count: Spotted at various times & places on Kiawah during the week-end: nine American alligators piled on the bank at Osprey Point golf course, three great blue herons, seven white-tailed deer, three raccoons, six "hoodies" or hooded mergansers, three double-crested cormorants, and dozens of snowy egrets.
