We have more sunshine on Kiawah this morning. J It is actually much warmer this morning than it has been recently, and temperatures will be in the sixties today.  The balmy weather is bringing us some rain though, so get outside early to play with your new Christmas or Hanukkah toys!

Kiawah is beautiful and sunny again this morning. The sunshine is gorgeous, and will no doubt warm us up enough to venture outside.

Yesterday's sunset was incredible.  As the sun went down the sky turned various hues of pink and purple, with just a dash or orange thrown in every now and then.  Mother Nature certainly outdid herself last night!

Weather: It is 44 degrees at 9:20 this morning. The high today should be in the mid-fifties.  Tonight's low is supposed to be in the low forties.

December 26, 2005

It is windy but sunny on Kiawah this morning. Other than the wind it looks like today will be a terrific day to get outside and play!

Sunday turned out to be a fabulous day to play with your holiday goodies, as the rain did not materialize until after dark.  Mother Nature gifted us with sunshine and warm temperatures during most of the afternoon.

Today is either Boxing Day or Kwanza, depending on your persuasion.  So happy whatever you are celebrating today!

Sunny and cool are the order of the day on Kiawah today. UPS, Federal Express, and USPS trucks are clogging the roadways as holiday packages are delivered to excited recipients.

You may have noticed that the web site experienced problems this morning.  The server where the web site "lives" was down.  Guess it was cold there too!  Thankfully it is corrected now, and should be fine.

Did you know? Tonight is the winter solstice. The winter solstice occurs when because of the earth's tilt, we are furthest from the sun, so the hours of daylight are the shortest, and the sun has its lowest arc in the sky.  But what it also means is that after today, each day will bring us just a wee bit more daylight.

Weather: It is 37 degrees at 9:20 this morning. The high today is supposed to be near fifty. Tonight's low should be in the low thirties.  ** PLANT WATCH **

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One large buck and two female white-tailed deer, roughly seven hooded mergansers, two double-crested cormorants,  one great blue heron, and dozens of snowy egrets.

December 20, 2005

It is sunny once again on Kiawah this morning, but COLD! Once again Kiawah has awakened to a sparkling, sunny morning.  Looking outside it would seem to be a typical warm tropical day...NOT!  We are certainly in the midst of winter now, no doubt about that.  Is it too early to start thinking spring?

Weather: It is 39 degrees at 9:20 this morning. Today's high should be in the mid-fifties. The low tonight is supposed to be near forty.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One large bobcat, three white-tailed deer, three double-crested cormorants,  one great blue heron, and dozens of snowy egrets.

December 19, 2005

This morning it is gray and overcast again. The clouds are supposed to leave by this afternoon and give us some sunshine later today.

Rain did pummel Kiawah Saturday, but not too much yesterday. It sprinkled just a bit, but nothing major. It would appear that the rain was a little behind schedule. Probably had to finish up some holiday shopping like the rest of us...  Speaking of which, it is less than a week until Christmas AND Hanukkah - where did December go?

Peek-a-boo, I see you! Gabriele Miniter shares this photo, taken on Salt Grass Court. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.

December 16, 2005  Week-end Edition

Kiawah is cool but sunny this morning. Friday is probably going to be the nicest weather for the week-end, so get outside to play if you can. There are only 9 days left until Christmas AND Hanukkah - better bundle up if you plan to go out to do some holiday shopping!

There are lots of shells on the beach this morning - perhaps the rain from yesterday whipped up the surf enough to propel them to the surface?  Who knows?  But there are dozens of moon snails and clams scattered everywhere.

Week-end Weather: It is 45 degrees at 9:15 Friday morning. Friday's high is supposed to be in the upper fifties, with a low in the upper thirties.  The high Saturday should be in the upper fifties again, but with a 20% chance of rain.  The low Saturday night is supposed to be in the lower forties with a 60% chance of showers.  Sunday will probably be soggy too, with highs in the upper forties and a 50% chance of rain.  Sunday night should bring lows in the upper thirties with a 20% chance of showers.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Three white-tailed deer, one yellow-rumped warbler, seven hooded mergansers, one great blue heron, five very wet raccoons, three double-crested cormorants, and dozens of snowy egrets.

December 15, 2005

The good news is that Kiawah is much warmer this morning.  The bad news is... it is raining. Probably no golf or tennis games will be played today.

More Astronomy 101: This is the Full Cold Moon, sometimes called the Full Long Nights Moon.  During December the winter cold sets in, and nights are at their longest and darkest. This moon is also sometimes called the Moon before Yule. The term Long Night Moon is a doubly appropriate name because midwinter nights are long, and the Moon is above the horizon for a long time. The midwinter full Moon has a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite a low Sun.

Kiawah Island Marathon: Some Kiawahians ran the race this past Saturday, and are now famous! Their photo is in this week's Charleston City Paper.  Click here for a sneak peek.

Weather: It is 45 degrees at 9:15 this morning. The temperature should reach the low sixties today.  There is a 100% chance of rain this morning, and thundershowers are on the way this afternoon. Tonight's low should be in the mid-forties with a 40% chance of showers.

Kiawah is quite chilly this morning! It is odd to glance outside and see what appears to be warmth and sunshine, but when you step outside, your senses tell you a different story!

Kiawah Island Marathon: Some Kiawahians ran the race this past Saturday, and are now famous! Their photo is in this week's Charleston City Paper.  Click here for a sneak peek.

Astronomy 101: Tonight you can risk catching a cold to see the Geminids meteor showers.  They are a medium speed shower with 50-100 meteors per hour.  The best viewing time is from 1 to 3 a.m.  So grab something REALLY warm to wear, get comfortable in the lawn chair, and gaze directly overhead to catch some of this meteor shower.

Weather: It is 37 degrees at 9:15 this morning. Today's high should be in the low fifties with a 20% chance of showers. The low tonight is supposed to be in the low forties.  There is an increasing chance of rain, especially after midnight - a 70% chance.

December 13, 2005

Though it is a bit cool on Kiawah this morning, once again the sunshine has come through for us, and the island looks warm and inviting.  Birds are serenading everyone - as you ride down Governor's Drive you can hear the squawking of the egrets and the calling of the sea gulls.

One of Kiawah's more elusive residents John Oakley saw this bobcat near the front gate (photo taken 5:00pm December 12th). Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.

December 12, 2005

Kiawah is back to its usual sunny self this morning.  But it is cold out there folks!  Well, to revise that slightly, it is cold to US.  Some of our Northern cousins in NJ/NY received 10 inches of snow over the week-end, so they probably don't think much of  "Kiawah cold"!

Saturday's marathon was well attended and supported.  Many Kiawahians (is that a word?) ran in the race.  Congratulations to Dottie Anderson, Gregg Bragg, Jane Lurie, Bob Lurie, and Bob Meister.  Anyone else out there run?  Let us know and we will post your name too!

Weather: It is 43 degrees at 9:15 this morning. Today's high should be near sixty. The low tonight is supposed to be should be near forty.  *** PLANT WATCH ***

Week-end Kiawah Critter Count: Spotted at various times & places around the island over the week-end: sixteen "hoodies" hooded mergansers, one pileated woodpecker, two American alligators, five raccoons, seven white-tailed deer, five double-crested cormorants, and dozens of snowy egrets.

December 9, 2005 Week-end Edition

It is overcast on Kiawah this morning.  Hopefully Mother Nature is getting the rain out of her system in time for the week-end!

Don't forget:  This week-end's big event is the 28th annual running of the Kiawah Island Marathon and Half Marathon. The weather should be terrific for running (or watching!) a marathon.  If you aren't already running or volunteering, please come out and support the runners!  A friendly wave and a "Way to go!" are appreciated more than you know!  Due to the race, the Kiawah Island Parkway will be closed (both sides) from Sea Forest Drive to the Vanderhorst gate from approximately 8:00 to 8:15 AM on Saturday.

Week-end Weather: It is 46 degrees at 9:00 Friday morning. The high Friday is supposed to be in the upper fifties with a 40% chance of showers. The low Friday should be near forty.  Saturday should dawn bright & sunny, with highs in the low sixties and a low near forty.  Last but not least Sunday is also supposed to see highs in the low sixties.  But the low should be in the upper thirties.  *** PLANT WATCH ***

Kiawah is cool and drizzly this morning. It would seem that our Northern friends are receiving snow however, so a few showers are certainly not so bad! Time to grab that good book you have been meaning to read and get started!

Weather: It is 54 degrees at 9:20 this morning. Today's high should be in the mid-fifties with a 90% chance of rain. The low tonight is supposed to be near fifty.

Today is... Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

December 6, 2005

Kiawah is brilliantly sunny this morning, but C-O-L-D! All Kiawah critters, humans included, will be wearing something extra warm today. It should warm up by this afternoon, but there is a frost warning for tonight.

Holiday Giving: Looking for a way to contribute to the community of Johns Island? Consider the "Christmas for Grandmothers" program. The Church of Our Saviour Episcopal, St. James AME, and Stono Baptist Church have joined to collect items for Johns Island grandmothers to choose from as gifts for their grandchildren. They are looking for new toys, clothing, books, and, for older grandchildren, $15 gift cards from WalMart, Target, etc. Freshfields Village has set up a collection point near Santa's House on the village green. A number of the stores are also putting out collection bins, and any of the churches will accept your donations.

Today it is overcast and gray on Kiawah.  The showers we had last night also brought strong wind gusts with them, though thankfully not any cold weather.  So much for all the yard work that was going on this week-end...

December 2, 2005 Week-end Edition

Kiawah is sunny but clear this morning. It is still fairly cold outside by Kiawah standards - a mere 44 degrees at 9:00 a.m.!  But a sweatshirt and hat should take care of that for any brave souls who venture outside this morning.
