August 29, 2006

It is S-T-E-A-M-Y this morning! It seems that we are receiving August's humidity all at once.  But soon enough fall will arrive, and with it cooler temperatures - hopefully without hurricanes.  All of this heat and humidity does provide the perfect excuse to head to the beach to enjoy the ocean breezes.  Will you be in the water today?

A snowy sentinel...  Keith Mendel took this photo in July while on Kiawah vacationing. He was lucky with his "hunting" and "shot" several different species of Kiawah birds.

Weather: It is 85 degrees at 9:05 this morning. Today will be a scorcher, with a heat index of 106!  The high is supposed to be near ninety, with a 20% chance of rain. Tonight's low should be in the low eighties.

August 25, 2006 Week-end Edition

Don't put away those umbrellas!  Showers are moving across Kiawah this morning, and they are supposed to be here for a while yet.  It would seem that today will be a great day for grabbing a book and sticking close to home.  What are you reading these days?

Week-end Weather: It is 75 degrees at 9:05 Friday morning. Despite the way it seems currently, the week-end is NOT supposed to be a wet one.  Friday brings a 40% chance of showers during the day and 30% during the evening.  Temperatures should range from highs in the mid-eighties to lows in the low seventies.  It will be just a wee bit warmer Saturday and Sunday - highs both days near ninety, lows in the mid-seventies. Tropical Storm Debbie has sent clouds our way this morning. But Kiawah is a bit cooler too! However, given the 50% chance of showers, you might want to get outside to play early today.

Two girls and a loggerhead  Suzie Williams sent these photos of little ladies helping the turtle patrol watch loggerheads make their way to the ocean. The cutie on the left is Sydney Sager, age 2 1/2 and the curly top cutie is Alessandra Hann, age 2. Sydney is the granddaughter of turtle patroller Lynne Sager, and Alessandra is the granddaughter of Kiawah resident Suzie Williams. After an overcast beginning earlier this morning, Kiawah is now warm and sunny.  This morning presents typical August weather for Kiawah - humid, mostly sunny, very warm, and a chance of showers.  There will be lots of folks wilting in this sticky heat!  It would be another perfect day to enjoy the ocean breezes or perhaps spend time at the pool.  How will you "beat the heat" today?

This morning Kiawah is warm and sunny.  Today should be a good day to test out the ocean waters, or better still, the pool.  Hot and steamy is the perfect excuse for some soothing cool water. Or perhaps a large serving of something C-O-L-D?

August 18, 2006 Week-end Edition

Kiawah is mostly cloudy this morning.  The island finally did receive some ferocious rain just after dark Thursday... for about an hour.  There is no evidence of it this morning though, other than the cloud cover.

Turtle Update: Nesting season is officially over.  Four days passed with no new nests, leaving this year's total number at 192.  But fear not! There are plenty of loggerheads hanging around, they just weigh 350 pounds less!  Hatching season is in full swing, with babies making their dash to the ocean during the nights.

It is a bee-uuuuuuu-tee-ful morning on Kiawah! There is gentle breeze stirring the Spanish moss in the oaks, making the humidity a bit less evident and the warmth more bearable. It should be another terrific day to get outside and play!

Kiawah is sunny and warm this morning. We have terrific weather in store, so it is time for another virtual excursion to one of Kiawah's natural wonders! Thus far we have virtually visited Marsh Island Park, the Marsh View Tower, Kildeer Pond, the Kiawah Swamp Garden, and the Sparrow Pond Nature Trail.  The next jaunt is the Rhett's Bluff Nature Area.  This is a wetland area that showcases many of Kiawah's native plants.  There is a raised boardwalk to stroll through the area.  Why not go visit and take a look for yourself?

Weather: It is 75 degrees at 7:30 this morning.  The high should be near ninety again today, lows in the upper seventies. There is a 20% chance of showers both today and tonight.

August 15, 2006

Kiawah is sunny and warm this morning. Things are beginning to slow down on the island as folks head back home and children head back to school.  It's hard to believe that summer is almost over, isn't it?

Turtle Update: Our loggerheads mamas are winding down, but still nesting.  As of Saturday August 12th, there are 192 nests on Kiawah's beach!

Weather: It is 83 degrees at 9:15 this morning.  It would seem that the past two days have been our normal August "cool spell", as now the mercury is headed back up!  Today we should see a high near ninety, and lows in the mid-seventies.

August 14, 2006

After the showers over the week-end, Kiawah is its normal sunny self this morning. No doubt it will feel downright comfy today, as it is the first time the temperature has been below ninety in about a month!  Hopefully you will have time to get outside and play today so you can enjoy it!

So much for watching the Perseids meteor shower Friday or Saturday night.  The cloud cover was thick, and no meteors could be seen.

Turtle Update: Our loggerheads mamas are winding down, but still nesting.  As of Saturday August 12th, there are 192 nests on Kiawah's beach!

Glossy Ibis Lane featured on Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom? The Zambitos seem to have quite the zoo in their backyard! Mama with her twin babies, and is that two or three raccoons in the background?

August 11, 2006  Week-end Edition

Last night's rain left clouds that cover Kiawah's sky this morning. The showers cooled things down just a wee bit, but didn't do much for the humidity.  So should we avoid the heat by heading to the beach, or avoid the rain by staying inside?  Only Mother Nature knows!

Astronomy 101: If we manage to avoid clouds and showers this week-end, there is a "mustn't miss"  astronomical event - the Perseids meteor shower is in town!  Between 50 & 100 meteors streak through the skies every hour.  You can see the meteors tonight, but the best hours for viewing are 2 to 5 a.m. tomorrow. Grab a blanket (watch out for fire ants!) lie down and look up!  Keep your fingers crossed that the rain stays away...

Week-end Weather: It is 81 degrees at 9:05 Friday morning.  The heat index will be near 105 Friday, but the temperature should cool a bit for the week-end. Highs Friday in the mid-nineties, lows in the mid-seventies, with a 50% chance of showers all day.  Saturday should be slightly cooler, with a high in the mid-eighties and a low in the low seventies.  There is a 60% chance of rain for  Saturday.  Sunday looks to be the driest day, with only a 20% chance of showers.  Highs Sunday in the mid-eighties, lows in the low seventies.

FYI: There is a special Town Council meeting this afternoon at 1:00 p.m. to discuss the development agreement between the Town and Kiawah Island Golf Resort.

Happy Island News: The little black and white dog found on Dunlin Ct. last week has a new home.  Her original owners were never located, but she has moved to Greenville with a new family. They fell in love with her and the feeling was mutual! Let's hear it for happy endings!

August 9, 2006

Kiawah is mostly overcast again this morning.  After all of the ominous rumbling late yesterday afternoon and early evening, you would think the island was deluged!  But noooo... Once again Mother Nature gave us only the sound portion of the thunderstorm show.  Kiawah did receive a few sprinkles, but barely enough to wet the ground.

Turtle Update Apparently our turtle mamas are not quite finished nesting.  Three more nests were found during the last shift, making this season's total 190 as of August 7th.  Big mama turtles still roaming the beach, little baby turtles waddling across the sand... Should the new turtle patrol slogan be "Look out for Loggerheads"?

Patiently waiting for breakfast...  This great blue heron was "captured" by Dale Williams at the spillway near Flyway Drive.

Weather: It is 81 degrees at 9:05 this morning.  Though the high should be in the low nineties today, the heat index will be over 100. Tonight's low is supposed to be in the upper seventies.  There is a 60% chance of rain today, and 50% tonight.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Five raccoons, one five-lined skink, two osprey, several golden silk spiders, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

Kiawah is mostly overcast this morning, though the sun peeks through occasionally.  There is not much of a breeze, so the humidity hangs on like a wet blanket.  Dress cool!
