June 29, 2007  Week-end Edition

Kiawah is sunny this morning, with just a slight breeze coming in off the ocean. The week-end looks like it may be a little wet, so today might be the best option to get outside and play!

Pileated Woodpecker Pileated woodpeckers have certainly been out and about recently.  Not one, not two, but THREE were spotted just yesterday on Marsh Island Drive!

June 20, 2007

Kiawah is overcast this morning, and it certainly looks like rain is on the way.  We could use some, as we are still under our normal rainfall so far this year.

Island News: Rusty Lameo tells us that several people have asked about the large yellow items washed up on Kiawah's beach during the last storm. They are dredging floats from the Folly Beach Project that broke free from their moorings during the storm. Great Lakes Dredging Co. made an on site inspection this past Friday and plans are underway to have them removed. Due to the size of equipment necessary it could be next week before this equipment arrives on our beach. In the mean time please refrain and or advise others not to climb or dive off these floats. If you have any questions on this matter please contact Rusty at Town Hall: (843) 768-5111.

Weather: It is 77 degrees at 9:00 this morning. Today brings us another good chance of rain, most likely thunderstorms. Highs today in the low eighties with an 80% chance of showers. Lows tonight in the low seventies, with a 60% chance of rain.

Kiawah is both sunny and cloudy this morning.  The humidity is very much in evidence - it will almost be a relief when it does begin to rain.  For now though, the ceiling fans get turned to high and the windows thrown open.  Few enough days remain before summer truly arrives and the air conditioner is a must!

By now you have seen various friends and neighbors mentioned and pictured on this site. It is Flag Day today.  Since it is not a major holiday, many people don't realize it's purpose. Flag Day is set aside to honor our flag, its designers and creators.  The holiday dates back to 1885 when a Wisconsin school teacher, BJ Cigrand, decided to have his students celebrate the flag's birthday. Kiawah is sunny and a bit humid this morning. It is a lazy hazy June day. We have had no showers since the week-end, despite the nearly constant "chance" of rain.  After a while it is easy to ignore that, is it not? J So it looks like today will be another perfect day to get outside and play!

June 4, 2007

It is mostly sunny on Kiawah this morning.  It is already nearly 80!  But June is typically when the summer furnace is turned on, so why should this year be the exception?

The storms that passed through the area over the week-end wreaked a bit of havoc on the trees.  Saturday evening a tree fell on Bohicket Road and completely blocked traffic in both directions for over an hour.  Kiawah didn't experience any major damage, though there are branches, palm fronds, and leaves everywhere.  Looks like the KICA maintenance crews have their work cut out for them!

Can you see me? This corn snake was spotted over the week-end, seemingly scouting for its lunch. Corn snakes are NOT poisonous, so don't worry! Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.

June 1, 2007 Week-end Edition

Kiawah is sunny and warm this morning. June has begun with a slightly muggy day - warm but not too warm, with a slight chance of rain. What does June have in store for you?

"In June, as many as a dozen species may burst their buds on a single day. No man can heed all of these anniversaries; no man can ignore all of them."

- Aldo Leopold

Pileated Woodpecker Woody Woodpecker has nothing on this bird! They can be up to 18" tall, so you cannot confuse any other woodpecker with the pileated.  Insects are the mainstay of this bird's diet, so they are welcome on Kiawah - especially during mosquito season! Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.

Week-end Weather: It is 79 degrees at 9:05 Friday morning. We have a chance of some rain this week-end, so hopefully we will actually receive some! Friday's high should be in the low eighties, the low in the low seventies with a 20% chance of showers.  Saturday's chance increases to 60% during the day, with a high near eighty.  The showers are even more likely Saturday night, with lows in the low seventies and a 70% chance of showers.  Sunday's high is supposed to be in the low eighties, again with a 70% chance of rain.  When the temperatures drop during the evening to a low in the upper sixties, the chance of showers drops to 30%.
