Looks like yet another fabulous day on our little barrier island. This morning the ocean breezes are gentle and fresh - like breaths of cool air brushing across your face. Even the water is calm and peaceful. Will you be spending any time at the beach today?
   Where has July gone? This July must be one of the coolest on record, with several days of temperatures in the eighties instead of the hundreds.

Weather: It is 74 degrees at 7:30 a.m. this morning. Highs today in the 80's, lows tonight in the 70's.  There is a 20% chance of rain.

   Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One Queen butterfly, three white-tailed deer, one anole, seven brown pelicans, two osprey, several golden silk spiders, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

It is warm and overcast on Kiawah this morning.

Turtle News: <drum roll please...> The very first nest has hatched on Kiawah!  That's right, the babies in Nest #2 popped out and are swimming madly in the ocean as you read this.  There are 73 nests on Kiawah's beach as of July 24th.  Lights out for loggerheads! 

Weather: It is 83 degrees at 9:30 a.m. this morning. Today's high will reach 85 with a low of 72.  There is a 60% chance of rain today, so don't forget your umbrellas.

Weekend Kiawah Critter Count: Spotted at various times & places around Kiawah over the week-end: One female and one baby white-tailed deer, praying mantis, three anoles, one broad-headed skink, four turkey vultures, twenty-six brown pelicans, one osprey, several golden silk spiders, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

July 27, 2007 Week-end Edition

It is sunny and warm on Kiawah this morning. It looks like a great day to hit the beach!

Turtle News: <drum roll please...> The very first nest has hatched on Kiawah!  That's right, the babies in Nest #2 popped out and are swimming madly in the ocean as you read this.  There are 73 nests on Kiawah's beach as of July 24th.  Lights out for loggerheads! 

Astronomy 101: There are two astronomical events this week-end: the full moon and a meteor shower! July is normally the month when the new antlers of buck deer push out of their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. This is why the name "Full Buck Moon". This moon was also often called the Full Thunder Moon, for the reason that thunderstorms are most frequent during this time. Another name for this month's Moon was the Full Hay Moon.

Also, the Delta Aquarids meteor showers will strut their stuff both Saturday and Sunday nights. Slow, long paths, of 15 to 25 meteors per hour should make them easy to spot. The best time to watch is to the south between 1:00 and 3:00 am. Find a place with a clear view of the sky and arrange for deck chairs or a blanket. Happy stargazing! Be sure to look overhead Saturday evening to see what's up!

 Week-end Weather: It is 80 degrees at 9:00 a.m. Friday morning. Friday's high should reach 91 with a low of 75. There is a  chance of isolated storms in the evening. The weather repeats on Saturday with a high again of 91, low of 75 with a chance of isolated storms. Sunday's temperatures are supposed to be highs in the upper-80s, and lows in the lower 70's

July 26, 2007

It is a bit cloudy on Kiawah this morning. We have a slight chance of showers today, but don't let that stop you from getting outside to play! 

We didn't get much rain yesterday, but it was a welcome respite while it lasted.

Weather: It is 78 degrees at 9:00 this morning. It seems we are back to our normal temperatures after a brief cool down.  Highs today near ninety, lows tonight near eighty, both with a 20% chance of rain.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count Four loggerhead turtles, one bluebird, fourteen brown pelicans, one raccoon, one white-tailed deer, two Carolina wrens, several golden silk spiders, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

July 25, 2007

Kiawah is overcast this morning, and we are currently receiving a wee bit of rain.  Though our vacationing beachgoers are less than thrilled, we really are in need of some rain.  Why not curl up with a good book and ride it out?

The Angel Oak The Angel Oak is located on Johns Island, very near the Maybank Highway - Main Road intersection.  It is a wonderful place to picnic, and a must-see spot.

Weather: It is 76 degrees at 9:05 this morning. Highs in the mid-eighties, lows in the mid-seventies, both with a 20% chance of showers.

July 24, 2007

It is sunny on Kiawah this morning, and quite a bit warmer than yesterday morning.  Still, our little bit of cool weather was really wonderful.  Did you get outside to play to enjoy it?

Island News:  If you missed it, the Golf Channel will be playing highlights from the Senior PGA tournament tonight at 8:00 p.m. 

Question of the day: Have you finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows yet?  If yes, what did you think?

July 23, 2007

Kiawah is sunny and <drum roll please...>  cool this morning!  Yes, that's right, COOL!  We received no rain to speak of this week-end, but yesterday Mother Nature sent us some much cooler breezes, and things are downright tolerable, especially for July!  Be sure to get outside and play today, to grab your own chunk of this amazing weather!

Question of the day: Have you finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows yet?  If yes, what did you think? 

Weather: It is 74 degrees at 9:00 this morning. The beginning of our week should be cooler than normal for this time of year. Highs today in the low eighties, lows tonight in the low seventies.

July 20, 2007 Week-end Edition

It is sunny and warm on Kiawah this morning. Despite the constant predictions of rain, we have not received any for quite a while.  No relief there... The ocean temperature is near eighty, so jumping into the water is not terribly refreshing.  Still, it beats staying inside all day.  See you on the beach?

Bottle-nosed Dolphin A bottle-nosed dolphin heads out for a swim just off Kiawah's beach. Bottle-nosed dolphins are often spotted around Kiawah, especially while kayaking or canoeing in the river.

Week-end Weather: It is 83 degrees at 9:00 Friday morning. Our week-end looks like it will be quite warm with a possibility of summer showers.  Highs Friday in the low nineties, with a 30% chance of rain. Lows Friday night in the low seventies with a 40% chance of showers. Saturday brings highs in the low nineties and lows in the low seventies, both with a 20% chance of rain.  It is supposed to cool down a bit for Sunday, with a high in the upper eighties and a low in the upper sixties, both with a 20% chance of showers.

Kiawah is sunny and warm this morning. We are still in the midst of our summer heat wave with its accompanying humidity. But the flora is delightful and green and the critters are happy and frolicking, so all must be right with Kiawah!

Weather: It is 84 degrees at 9:05 this morning. Highs today in the low nineties, lows tonight in the mid-seventies, both with the ever-present 20% chance of rain.

July 18, 2007

It is sunny and warm on Kiawah this morning. The weather is not being very cooperative, bestowing heat and humidity rather than nice warm temperatures and soft ocean breezes.  Are you managing to stay cool?

Turtle News: The Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol reports 66 nests on Kiawah's beach as of July 16th.

Weather: It is 85 degrees at 9:00 this morning. We will have "full on" July weather today, complete with a heat index near 105. Today's high should be in the low nineties, lows tonight near eighty, both with a 20% chance of showers.

July 17, 2007

Kiawah is sunny this morning, and already hot!  The summer heat has not been stopping folks from touring Kiawah via bicycle though, as the paths have been very busy during the past several days. Creating your own breeze seems to be the way to go when Mother Nature socks it to us with ninety degree temperatures.  Have you been out on a bike lately?

Turtle News: The Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol reports 66 nests on Kiawah's beach as of July 16th.

Painted Bunting Diane Beck says this painted bunting visits the feeder at her house quite often.  Painted Buntings are quite colorful, as you can see!

Weather: It is 86 degrees at 9:00 this morning. More hot and humid weather is on the way... Highs today near ninety, with a 20% chance of rain. Tonight's low should be near eighty.

July 16, 2007

It is sunny on Kiawah this morning, with lots of clouds overhead. 

Loggerhead turtles are about to begin hatching here on Kiawah. Baby loggerheads spend 50 to 60 days in their eggs, waiting until the "perfect" moment to emerge into the world. Soon the turtle patrol will be reporting on the first hatch of the season! Have you been fortunate enough to observe a loggerhead turtle?

Weather: It is 81 degrees at 9:00 this morning. It looks like we are in weather repeat mode, as today's weather is nearly a replica of the past several days. Today's high should be near ninety. Lows tonight in the upper seventies, both with a 30% chance of rain.

July 13, 2007  Week-end Edition

Kiawah is covered in sunshine this morning.  It is indeed summer in South Carolina, with it's associated ninety degree weather and ubiquitous chance of rain.  Our week-end may be sunny, it may be rainy - who knows?  Whatever the weather, here's hoping you have a terrific week-end!

Triskaidekaphobia... Does it apply to you?  If so, today is your least favorite day. The definition of triskaidekaphobia is "fear of the number 13" but is generally used to refer to the fear of the inauspicious date of Friday the 13th. 

Great Blue Heron This heron was "captured" in The Preserve.  If you have not visited, it is a wonderful place for bird watching.

Week-end Weather: It is 85 degrees at 9:05 Friday morning.  Highs Friday near ninety, lows in the mid-seventies, both with a 20% chance of showers.  It might get a little wet Saturday - highs in the mid-eighties, lows in the upper seventies, both with a 50% chance of rain.  Last but not least, Sunday weighs in with a high in the upper eighties and a low in the mid-seventies, also both with a 50% chance of showers.  Umbrellas anyone?

July 12, 2007

It is sunny on Kiawah this morning.  It seems that we are back to normal July weather - temperatures in the low nineties and a perpetual chance of thunderstorms.  It is already muggy outside! The sky is a lovely shade of blue with tufts of clouds mixed throughout. 

Kiawah was the recipient of some hard rain yesterday evening.  The winds were quite strong, prompting tornado warnings in some places. The rain itself lasted less than an hour, but it certainly drenched everything!

Turtle News:  The Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol reports 59 nests on our beach as of July 10th.   

Weather: It is 82 degrees at 9:10 this morning.  Away from the beach we will see another high heat index today - above 100.  Today's high should be near ninety with a 20% chance of rain.  The low tonight is supposed to be in the mid-seventies, also with a 20% chance of showers.

July 11, 2007

Kiawah is overcast this morning.  It is quite toasty outside too, and we are headed into the nineties again.

Turtle News:  The Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol reports 59 nests on our beach as of July 10th.   

Weather: It is 84 degrees at 9:00 this morning.  It will be another really warm day today, with a heat index of 105 again.  Stay cool! Highs in the low nineties with a 20% chance of showers.  Tonight's low should be near eighty with a 40% chance of rain. 

Today's Kiawah Critter Count Two osprey, one five-lined skink, three white-tailed deer, several golden silk spiders, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive. Heard but not seen:  two chuck wills widows. MaryLynn Stubler reports seeing five Mississippi Kites last week at her Fairway Oaks villa.

July 10, 2007

It is sunny and already toasty on Kiawah this morning.  It is going to be quite warm, so today's activities should focus on something C-O-O-L.  Swimming anyone?

Fishing News:  It's time for South Carolina anglers to purchase their annual licenses for the 2007-2008 season. Last season's licenses expired on June 30th. You can visit the DNR web site and click "Buy" to purchase a license, or you can purchase one by telephone 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling 1-866-714-3611. 

Weather: It is 83 degrees at 9:00 this morning.  We are in for a scorcher today - the heat index this afternoon is supposed to reach 105.  Be careful out there!  Highs near ninety, lows in the upper seventies, both with a 30% chance of showers.

July 9, 2007

Kiawah is overcast this morning, though the sun is trying to peek through the clouds.

Kiawah did receive some showers Saturday evening - complete with thunder and lightning.  We are still woefully under the normal amount of rainfall however.  

Dancin' to the beat? Joe Zambito apparently has squirrel entertainment at his house!  Joe says "You have to love it when nature feels the beat", and names this photo "Doin' the soft shoe". 

Weather: It is 81 degrees at 9:00 this morning. It seems more showers are on the way, as there is a 60% chance of rain both today & tonight.  Highs in the upper eighties, lows in the upper seventies.

July 6, 2007 Week-end Edition

It is mostly sunny on Kiawah this morning. We do have cloudy skies, but thus far the sun is winning the battle.  

The Spirit of South Carolina Chuck Harris shares this photo of The Spirit of South Carolina under full sail leading the Tall Ships out of Charleston Harbor in May of this year. Chuck says "One of the best things about Kiawah is it's proximity to Charleston and it's wonderful Maritime heritage."

Week-end Weather: It is 79 degrees at 9:00 Friday morning.  We are headed into the upper eighties today, with a low in the upper seventies this evening.  Saturday brings us a slight chance of showers that increases as we get closer to Sunday.  Highs Saturday in the upper eighties with a 20% chance of rain.  Lows in the mid-seventies with a 40% chance. There is still a 40% chance of showers Sunday, with highs in the upper eighties, and lows in the mid-seventies.

July 5, 2007

Kiawah is her normal sunny self this morning.  There is a slight breeze and a few clouds are drifting lazily through the sky.

Did you enjoy the fireworks last night?  Both displays were wonderful, and seemed to be well-attended. Or perhaps your celebration of choice was the festival at Night Heron Park, or viewing the sand sculptures on the beach yesterday afternoon. Whatever your preference, this fourth of July was wonderful! The weather cooperated quite nicely and treated us to a lovely summer day.         

Weather: It is 79 degrees at 9:00 this morning. Today should be yet another lovely day to head to the beach! Highs in the mid-eighties, lows in the mid-seventies.

It is mostly sunny on Kiawah this morning. It certainly looks like Mother Nature is cooperating in honor of Independence Day.  What special celebration plans do you have?

Island Happenings: Fireworks tonight courtesy of the Town of Kiawah Island  beginning at 9:30 p.m. at Night Heron Park.  And don't miss a second set of bonus fireworks courtesy of The Sanctuary begins at 9:45 p.m. on the beach.

Turtle News: As of Monday July 2, there are 52 nests on Kiawah's beach.  Go mama turtles!

Kiawah is overcast again this morning.  Though it may look like you need to make indoor plans, supposedly there will be no rain.  So grab your gear and get outside and play!

July 2, 2007 

It is overcast and raining on Kiawah this morning.  Though island visitors are probably not very thrilled with the rain, we could certainly use it.  Our critters and birds will be especially appreciative!

Full Strawberry Moon The full Strawberry Moon occurs every June.  Were you fortunate enough to see it this past Saturday?

Weather: It is 74 degrees at 9:00 this morning. Looks like we Kiawah will be receiving a thorough soaking today, at least until mid-afternoon.  Highs today in the low eighties, with a 50% chance of showers.  Tonight's low should be in the low seventies with a 40% chance of rain.
