Astronomy 101: There are two
astronomical events this week-end: the
full moon and a meteor shower! July is
normally the month when the new antlers
of buck deer push out of their foreheads
in coatings of velvety fur. This is why
the name "Full Buck Moon". This moon was
also often called the Full Thunder Moon,
for the reason that thunderstorms are
most frequent during this time. Another
name for this month's Moon was the Full
Hay Moon.
Also, the Delta Aquarids meteor showers
will strut their stuff both Saturday and
Sunday nights. Slow, long paths, of 15
to 25 meteors per hour should make them
easy to spot. The best time to watch is
to the south between 1:00 and 3:00 am.
Find a place with a clear view of the
sky and arrange for deck chairs or a
blanket. Happy stargazing! Be sure to
look overhead Saturday evening to see
