December 29, 2006  Week-end Edition

Kiawah is bright and shiny this morning, basking in sunshine. Today may be your last dry opportunity to get outside and play this week-end, so do it if you can!

Folks are gearing up for their New Year's Eve celebrations - please drive carefully if you go out, and stay safe!

Don't Forget: KICA is sponsoring a New Member Welcome Coffee on Friday, December 29, 2006, at 9:00 a.m. in Town Council Chambers at 21 Beachwalker Drive. Light refreshments will be served. This is a terrific chance to meet your new neighbors and to learn the ins and outs of life on Kiawah.  Make plans to attend!

Kiawah is sunny again this morning, but still a bit cool. It looks deceptively warm outside...but don't be fooled!  At least for this morning you will need some layers to keep warm!  Mother Nature is sending some warmer weather for this afternoon though.  We should all be able to get outside and play in the sunshine.

December 27, 2006

It is sunny on Kiawah this morning, but MUCH cooler than recent mornings. Has anyone noticed that the robins have arrived a tad early this year?  They have been flitting all over the place, apparently eating the berries on the palm trees.  Perhaps they are harbingers of an early spring?

Weather: It is 40 chilly degrees at 9:00 this morning.  It would seem that we are finally receiving December weather.  Today's high should be in the upper fifties, tonight's low near forty.

** PLANT WATCH **

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Dozens and dozens of American robins, two yellow-rumped warblers, one great blue heron, and loads of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

December 26, 2006

Kiawah is finally seeing some sunshine this morning. So while it will be much cooler than it has been recently, at least we will see some sunny skies!

** Happy Kwanzaa! **

** Happy Boxing Day! **

Kwanzaa is a 7 day festival celebrating the African American people, their culture and their history. It is a time of celebration, community gathering, and reflection. A time of endings and beginnings.

Today is also the second day of Christmas, or Boxing Day, and in the Bahamas, it is Junkanoo!  Junkanoo is a 300 year-old festival , and is like Mardi Gras with African tribal rituals. It is a HUGE party, full of music, art and fierce costume competition. So why not select your favorite holiday, grab your family and friends, and celebrate anew?  Have a great day everyone...

"Hoodies" Kelly Bragg shares this photo of "hoodies" or hooded mergansers. The brown ones are the females, while the black & white headed ones are the males. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.

December 22, 2006  Week-end Edition

Kiawah is overcast again this morning, with slight sprinkles covering the island. And no, NOT the kind you put on holiday cookies, but rather the wet chilly kind!  There is a chance of thundershowers this afternoon, but even if they do not arrive, it will be a warm rainy day.  Hopefully you have a good book to read or something else that will keep you warm & dry!

Did you know? The Ursids meteor shower will strut it's stuff tonight and tomorrow night.  If you head outside after dark and look to the North, you should see 15 to 25 medium speed meteors per hour all night long.  Enjoy!

While you are looking skyward this week-end, perhaps you will see a fat man in a red suit flying about as well?  With eight tiny reindeer?  If you can't find Santa with your very own eyes, you can always check the North American Air Defense Command web site.  Yes, believe it or not, there is an entire web site dedicated to "tracking" his progress across the globe as he delivers his toys!  Check it out...

Want to play a little game while you wait for Santa to arrive?  Visit Santa's Toy Hunt and Santa Tracker in Google Earth by clicking here...  You can search the Earth for giant toys and track Santa as he makes his deliveries beginning on December 24th.

December 21, 2006

It is overcast on Kiawah this morning. Have you noticed everyone bustling about recently?  There is no rest for the weary as folks hustle to get their holiday shopping done, or finish packing to travel to see their families, or run to the store for that final ingredient to make their holiday feast "just so".  Will you be able to take time to relax today?

Kiawah's Beach Danny Zampino is a new contributor to our community web site.  He shares this photo of our beach. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.

December 15, 2006 Week-end Edition

Kiawah is overcast this morning, but actually quite warm. It is foggy too, reminiscent of the Carl Sandburg poem.  There were "fog fingers" scattered about, winding through the marsh, stretched across the water.  In case you have not seen the poem recently, here it is:

The fog creeps in on little cat feet.
It sit on silent haunches,
Looking over harbor and city,
And then moves on.

Happy Hannukah!

Hanukkah begins at sundown tonight. Hanukkah is The Festival of Lights.  It celebrates the victory of the Maccabees and the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple. It also commemorates the miracle of the oil that burned for 8 days.  If you would like to learn more, click here.

Week-end Weather: It is 58 degrees at 9:05 Friday morning.  Highs Friday near seventy, lows tonight in the low fifties.  We should see the same weather all week-end: highs near seventy, lows near fifty.  Not too bad for the middle of December, is it?

It is a tiny bit sunny on Kiawah just now. A fog warning is in effect this morning, and with good reason!  The sun is trying to break through the clouds, so here's hoping for success!  A nice sunny day with temperatures near seventy would be wonderful, wouldn't it?

Celestial Event:  If it clears up, the Geminids meteor shower will be visible tonight. It is a medium speed shower with 50-100 meteors per hour.  The best viewing time is from 1 to 3 a.m.  So grab something warm to wear, get comfortable in the lawn chair, and gaze directly overhead to catch some of this meteor shower.

December 13, 2006

Kiawah is overcast and rainy this morning. Seems the 20% chance of rain from yesterday took its time arriving, but did finally find its way to Kiawah during the early morning hours.  It is sprinkling lightly here now, but should stop soon, at least until this evening.

Astronomy 101: If it does stop raining you can check out the Geminids meteor shower tonight and tomorrow night.  This is a medium speed shower with 50-100 meteors per hour.  The best viewing time is from 1 to 3 a.m.  So grab something warm to wear, get comfortable in the lawn chair, and gaze directly overhead to catch some of this meteor shower.

December 8, 2006 Week-end Edition

Kiawah is sunny but C-O-L-D this morning! It is deceptively bright and sunny, but quite a bit chillier than last week, that is for certain!   It is peculiar to glance outside and see what appears to be warmth and sunshine, but when you step outside, your senses tell you a different story!

Don't Forget: The 29th annual Kiawah Island Marathon and Half Marathon starts Saturday morning at East Beach Conference Center at 8:00 a.m.  The Kiawah Island Parkway near Turtle Point will be closed for approximately 15 minutes beginning at 8:15 a.m.  If you aren't already running or volunteering, please come out and support the runners!  A friendly wave and a "Way to go!" are appreciated more than you know!

Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day: December 7th is dedicated as a day to remember those who died in the Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The attack on Pearl Harbor, in which more than 2,400 Americans died, was the final push that convinced Americans to join World War II.

December 4, 2006

Kiawah is sunny this morning, but warm doesn't enter into the picture! Brrrrrr...  A sweatshirt and hat should take care of the cold for any brave souls who venture outside this morning.

Astronomy 101: The Full Cold Moon; or the Full Long Nights Moon is tonight at 7:24 p.m. It is so named because during December the winter cold fastens its grip, and nights are at their longest and darkest. It is also sometimes called the Moon before Yule. The term Long Night Moon is a doubly appropriate name because the midwinter night is so long, and because the Moon is above the horizon for a long time. The midwinter full Moon has a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite a low sun.

Sunset over the Kiawah River John Oakley shares this photo he took during Thanksgiving week.  This shot was taken from Inlet Cove facing Cassique and the Kiawah River. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.
