August 31, 2007   Week-end Edition

It is cloudy on Kiawah this morning, with just a slight touch of rain.  We may have a soggy week-end in store - do you know where your umbrella is?

Island News: Kiawah's golf courses, along with over 4,000 across the country, will be participating in the first annual Patriot Golf Day on September 1st. Each course will collect an extra dollar from every golfer Saturday to benefit Wounded Warriors, Inc. and help families of fallen soldiers.  The event will provide money for the families of soldiers disabled or killed in the line of duty, and provide for their children's education.

A baby loggerhead waddles to the ocean Grant Liu is a first-time contributor to our community web site.  Grant saw this baby loggerhead as it was making it's way to the water.  Rewards abound if you manage to get up early and head to the beach!  Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.

Week-end Weather: It is 76 degrees at 9:00 a.m. Friday morning. Friday the high should be in the upper eighties with a 30% chance of showers. (Since it is raining now, shouldn't that be a 100% chance of showers?)  The low is supposed to be in the mid-seventies with a 20% chance of rain.  Highs Saturday in the mid-eighties, again with a 30% chance of showers.  The chance increases to 40% for Saturday night, and the low should be in the mid-seventies again.  Last but not least, Sunday brings a 50% chance of rain during the day and evening, along with highs in the mid-eighties and lows in the mid-seventies.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count Three baby loggerhead turtles, one female white-tailed deer, one anole, one raccoon, two blue jays, eight brown pelicans, two golden silk spiders, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

August 30, 2007

Kiawah is mostly sunny this morning. Just one more day remains in August, then it's onward towards fall.

Kiawah's weather is a little like a broken record these days... hot and humid, with a slight chance of showers. Here we are at the end of August, with our visitors leaving. Soon all that will remain is the warm weather and us! Why is it that visitors are not around in September and October? It is so beautiful on the island then, and there are not many folks here. Is it the potential for hurricanes?

Weather: It is 80 degrees at 9:05 a.m. this morning. Today's weather should be an exact repeat of yesterday's.  Highs near ninety, lows in the mid-seventies, and a 20% chance of rain during the day & evening.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count One male and two female white-tailed deer, one great blue heron, one five-lined skink, one raccoon, five brown pelicans, two golden silk spiders, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

August 29, 2007

It is sunny and fairly humid on Kiawah this morning. As we approach the end of another month (can you believe it?) summer also comes to a close.  It seems like just yesterday that Kiawah was gearing up for the influx of visitors, and we are already saying good-bye!

August 28, 2007

Kiawah is overcast this morning, and a light rain is falling. The Weather Channel only calls for 1/4" of rainfall, but here's hoping we receive quite a bit more!  Beachgoers may not appreciate it, but our flora and fauna certainly will!

August 27, 2007

It is cloudy on Kiawah this morning. We have more typical August weather - humid, very warm, and a chance of showers. There will be lots of folks wilting in this sticky heat! It would be a perfect day to enjoy the ocean breezes or perhaps spend time at the pool. How will you "beat the heat" today?

Mother Nature was kind to us this week-end.  Most of the rain we received waited until after dark, and stopped by morning.  We are still almost a foot under the normal rainfall for this time of year, so hopefully we will get more soon.

Osprey surveying the kingdom    This osprey was spotted at Osprey Point Golf Course. It was checking out the nearby pond - possibly for a snack? Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.

The event will be held from 6:30 to 9:00 pm. Click here for more information.

August 23, 2007

It is overcast on Kiawah this morning, and much cooler than recent mornings. The temperature should still be in the low nineties today however.

There was quite a light show for most of last night, along with some loud thunder.  Unfortunately we did not receive much rain to go along with it.  So could you say we had all of the sound with none of the fury?

Weather: It is 75 degrees at 9:05 a.m. this morning. Highs today in the low nineties with a 40% chance of rain. Tonight's low is supposed to be in the mid-seventies with a 20% chance of showers.

August 22, 2007

Kiawah is mostly sunny this morning, with numerous clouds drifting lazily across the sky.  It looks to a hot sticky August day for us - but it IS August after all...

Turtle News: The Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol reports that nesting season is officially over. That leaves our final nest count as 84, which is considerably lower than normal.  Several factors could be impacting the nest numbers - everything from our beach renourishment to the cool Gulf Stream early in the season.  Hatching is well underway though!

Weather: It is 82 degrees at 9:05 a.m. this morning. Looks like another August scorcher is on the way, especially inland from the beaches. Watch out for the heat index from 12:00 to 8:00 p.m., as it could be as high as 108. But the high on Kiawah should be in the low nineties, lows in the upper seventies.  There is a 20% chance of showers both today & this evening.

Mystery Bird? Jay Smith photographed this bird recently, but is not certain what it is.  It could be a bald eagle, but as we cannot see the tail feathers, it could also be a marsh hawk, or perhaps even an osprey.  Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.
